Ladies and Gents of RTTP, I am going to attempt to put together a wonderful compilation of bands from New England. There are many great bands from this area and we could/should put together something we are all proud of. I am looking to put together an all encompassing mix of black metal bands from this area. I want it to be dirty, atmospheric, vile, blasphemous, raw, epic, huge and professional sounding.
I am putting this out there to gauge the interest in such a compilation. I have an idea of 5 or 6 of the bands I would like to see on this, however, I am open to suggestions and offers. If the interest is overwhelming, I have no issue with making this a dual disc/LP.
For bands do not have something recorded, I am basically offering my studio services free of charge to make this compilation happen. I have a full recording studio with 16 simultaneous channels of recording, a wide variety of mics, equipment and software plug-ins. For bands that have tracks that they are proud of, I can master them free of charge as well.
My plan for release is in the month of July, 2010. The cut-off date for bands would be around May. I plan to release them in a single color eco-sleeve ( or something different, again dependent on the interest) I will make this financially as painless as possible on all the bands and hope to get bands a good chance to make some money and publicity off of this compendium. There will be more details as I finalize the line-up.

I'd suggest calling it "black death over new England part II" because there was a bm comp released a few years ago too.
edit: actually it was more of a three way split than a comp. it was released on two dyi labels, one of them was Cnv matt's north cabin label via cassete.
Are you strictly sticking to cd or do you want another ( limited) release on vinyl or cassete as well?

It's going to be called the New England Compendium Maleficarum. At the rate I am getting responses from people, it is looking like a double cd at this point. If the cd goes well, i'm not opposed to looking into a seperate vinyl and cassette pressing... unless bands want to spend the money to do a quad vinyl pressing.

Not to sound like an ass, but what does the recording quality have to do with the compilation? All the metal comps I own have all sorts of production qualities and band sounds.
In other words, a certain bands' essence can be tied into production quality, or lack thereof, especially within black metal. I like all of your ideas with this except a limitation on production quality. It's a black metal comp.

Just take the entire comp to a mastering guy and have him to an overall master to the whole disc so that all tracks are roughly the same volume/frequencies etc and that'd be fine...

Not fer nuthin', dude, but it's not like if this were a ska comp or something where you can just do a novelty song that sounds like the genre you're emulating and that's all there is to it. It could sound great but Scaphism is still a rape-and-Star-Wars-themed silly DM band. An excellent one, IMO, but this is BM; the music is like half to a third of the art in question, and you can't really switch-hit or fence-sit.

We are one of the first "Black Metal" bands to have two full length albums with a piano driven sound and absolutely no guitars. We now use guitars to add some flavor. Even Malefic of Xasthur really dug our old stuff as you can see he thanked us on the All Reflections Drained album which also rules...

I would really like to move in a weird mort garson meets old/new xasthur type sound with alot of tangerine dream type in between piano only tracks...But just as with the chaos of our first album it will be misunderstood and left out...No one understood that our first album was about classical psychological experimentation and the mentally ill that is why it is in almost absolute chaos. but if we said, "we are the audio essence of """evil""" ", then we would have been hailed from now to kingdom come. DOnt get me wrong, I love abruptum but they are talked about often and they were even more chaotic and accepted and they just experimented with random instrumentation and screaming. I know I am jumping off subject here but it really irks me to see all these black metal shows and we are never invited to play any of them. When in fact we do alot of creative stuff and would def add to the atmosphere. We are probably the only band in this area to hold a mock funeral live, a mock mass live with full pope outfits and play piano driven black metal but once again we are never asked to even play a show or two so we end up having to play as220 with art fags that have nothing to do with what we are playing thus resulting in no audience at all...

Should be exclusively a New England Black Metal comp = no death metal bands, no New York bands, no Canadians. Representative tracks offering NE perspectives on black metal that provide insight to each band.
The time is ripe and there's a hell of a lot of unique area bands that can contribute great stuff. I know Slag wants to release a quality representative comp - something cohesive and complete. So I'm assuming tracks should to have something to offer to the whole and be able to stand up to the other material well, and how it's recorded doesn't matter as long as it fits that criteria. Volume leveling and mastering is a different issue.
So, Scaphism wouldn't fit on a NEBM comp anymore than a band like Ipssissimus would fit on a NEDM comp; NE has plenty to offer on the death metal front that would warrant it's own compilation.

Eh - I'm just psyched for the idea, and (like probably most of the bands) want it to be something I can support and be involved in. If it was just a big demo sampler of whatever bands, it'd be ok; if it's a snapshot of the best of what NE has to offer, it could be amazing.

I think with the amount of responses I am getting for this, only the best songs are going to be chosen. I think it is going to be a 2 cd maximum, or 144 minutes. A panel of people will choose what songs will and will not make it. As mentioned, this should be the best of what New England has to offer. It's not a popularity contest, but not every New England BM band is going to make it on this comp. Most will, but not all.

you are gonna see why there is no NEIWP vol. II
this is one reason.
also forget about the 2 disc thing for now. concentrate on one quality disc. if you get enough material then think double disc or volumes one and 2. this sort of thing will be better figured out after you figure out your finances. I assume you are doing this for promotion (of bands,your studio, nebm in general) not for profit. after you price out copies and packaging, shipping, set up fees of one disc vs. 2. Number of bands on your cd (black metal songs tend to be longer) etc. you'll know what to charge bands if you go that route. if you pay for it yourself you can make your money back and profit but then you get into copyright bs especially if any bands are on labels. promotion vs profit. another reason i say forget the double disc idea is that a lot of folks wont follow thru. NEIWP vol 1 had almost 50 bands express interest. about 35 actually signed up and said they would definitely get material to me. 22 bands did. Granted you have a little more time to work with so that might pan out in your favor.
as for the recording quality i think that was a major downfall of the last comp. granted the thing was mastered in sound forge and ozone but the volumes of all the tracks i got where all over the map as were the amounts of compression. pro mastering will fix this to a degree but with levels and compressing that far apart it would have been a nightmare for any mastering engineer to work with. its best if you get the raw wav files of the final mix before the mastering but most bands dont have access to that, just the mastered copies, which as we said are all over the place compared to one another. Also, I personally dont like the basement one microphone sounding shitty black metal recordings either. i dont care how trve kvlt a certain band is. if it sounds like tin cans and chanting echoing horribly in a basement amid some squeals that repesent a guitar tone i dont want to fucking hear it.
also the voting thing but then saying its not a poulartiy contest is kinda weird. wait till you start collecting material from people before making these statements. im sure only more arguing will ensue as to the true kult status and why one band deserves to be on the comp and another doesn't.
but it's not my comp im just sharing my 2 cents through my personal expiriences of putting together a comp like this. let me know if you have any specific questions.

well perhaps you'd like to actually learn a little bit about what he was talking about before jumping to conclusions. we've been putting together a side project of black metal songs for a while now, considering all of the band members are avid fans. but i suppose if we aren't locally kvlt enough then i guess it's cool to just shoot us out of the sky. kind of fucked up if you ask me.

I'm trying to gauge the work of having a studio/record label under my control, so in a way, i'm using this as a tool myself. Any band on this comp will NOT have to buy cd's.... HOWEVER, cd's will be available for purchase by bands so the band (not myself) CAN turn a profit. The ratio for how much profit can be made will strictly be influenced by how many bands want to buy cd's. There is sliding discount for cd's made in bulk... so the more we do, the cheaper they are, the more profit and promotion the bands get. I am not looking to make anything off this cd.

I also agree with this statement... to a point. This comp is about the music. We as a New England scene and I as a organizer/engineer have to put our names to something and it needs to be the very best, or I do not want to be a part of it. For me, sacrifice the individual for the greater good or something to that effect. If there are a few NEBM bands that don't "fit the bill" or the songs don't belong, they will be passed over for other bands. As much as it stinks for the people not making it, this is the way it is going to be. I want a "sweeping, comprehensive and painful" catalog of bands for this comp.

We never ask anyone to join and if they do it is usually free or we ask they show proof that they donated to some organiztion that helps others. It is called the world church of satanic liberation. We know satan is a christian concept and we know that there is no such thing but we embrace all that many religions have decided to call satanic. So it is a play on words. Just like how our band is a play on mock concepts and historical mishaps. The ritual we follow is that of normal conversations about philosophy. To an outsider that is christian we are "satanic". To an insider, we are the philosophers, nothing more and nothing less. But it is a really fun organization that gives us a chance to explore other peoples music and discuss all kinds of things. wow, this turned into a witchhunt on Scaphism. i overreacted above, and for that i apologize, it's been a tough few weeks. i have been trying to put together a black metal project for quite some time, and that has been able to happen with the guys from Scaphism. THE OTHER PROJECT WE'RE WORKING ON, NOT SCAPHISM has a song i personally feel would fit very well on this. seems that the arguments in here are semantics on the band name, not the project at hand. i hope that we are considered and given a fair chance.

FAQ
#1 I intend to make zero profit from this. This is for bands to make money from, for bands to get promotion, recognition, for New England BM to show the rest of world what we are about.
#2What do I get out of this? I am increasing my portfolio and increasing my experience recording the style of music I like to record. I honestly look forward to meeting all of you and seeing what this blossoms into. We have a wonderful opportunity to organize and mutually benefit each other.
#3 Due to the response, there are going to be two cd's released simultaneously. Limited to 500 copies each (unless the masses have a problem with it, we can do more). I want to hand silk-screen the artwork for all 1000 cd's on a thick cardboard wallet.
The Compendium Maleficarum Red and the Compendium Maleficarum Black editions.
Both will be organized randomly with no heirarchy.
Both will have the same art (minus track listing), with different colors.
Advantages of doing two seperate versions versus a dual disc?:
a - Bands can purchase only the cd's of the version they want to sell
b- Raises collectability
c - Bands can buy both cd's and increase chance of profit (having both versions at a show could sway a customer to buy both or the version they do not have)
#4 This will be released online for free, with bands able to link to it and promote themselves and their fellow BM bands.
With the permission of every band, I plan to send it to various review sites, magazines, etc to increase exposure.
#5 Each band has from 4 to 8 minutes on this compilation. With many BM songs being on the longer end of the spectrum, the maximum is put in to ensure that a greater number of bands have the equal opportunity as the others. The minimum is put in for the same reason, for bands with shorter songs to have equal opportunity.
#6 Cd's are going to be replicated in bulk. This will keep costs down. Since I plan on doing the labor of screenprinting (feel free to volunteer to help), the albums will be much cheaper for you, the bands to buy and distribute.
#7 I plan on fronting the cost to make the cd's. Each band who wants cd's will need to submit a small deposit so that my investment is protected. Upon delivery of cd's, band will be responsible for cost of cd replication and cost per piece of cardboard wallet.

Yes.
I've undertaken far too many projects this year and I've also noticed an influx of great new BM bands. Oneiric Realm, Sarcomancy, Kathadin, Vaettir, Obsidian Tongue and more will really make this comp shine. I really think 2011 is going to be a great year for NEBM.
And yes, please new Horn of Valere.
