once again this dynamic duo kicks my ass. awesome album all around. they have just about completely abandoned any black metal ties and are focusing on the punk/thrashish/80's heavy metal sound. this is definitely on par with Dark Thrones and Black Flags. the riff work is incredible, they really stepped up their game. Fenriz does a lot of vocal work, a lot of his songs are similar to the feel of "Graveyard Slut", and he does a lot of actual singing. i have zero complaints about this, i love their "if you don't like it you can fuck off and die" attitudes. keep up the killer work gentlemen.

Why not listen to the 100,000,000 bands that have ripped off and rehashed early darkthrone over and over again for the last 20 years?? If that is what you faggots want then quick bitching and go listen to that... The new stuff is fucking great. Its not "punk" either its obviously influenced by some punkish bands, however its obviously an amalgamation of early bands like manilla road, motorhead, iron maiden, venom, etc. Just in a much more direct way than your Transylvanian hunger cd's.
I like all phases of darkthrone a lot and I appreciate the evolution and variety. One of the few bands that has changed sound slightly but never changed the feeling and aesthetics. The quality is also much better. Favorite albums will always be, Blaze, Panzerfaust, Hate Them, Transylvanian Hungar and Soulside, but there are none I dislike which says a lot.

IRON MAIDEN and MANILLA ROAD??? Have you even heard them? I don't know about CtW, but on the mediocre-ass FOAD and DTaBF, I can't think of even a single riff that resembles either of those bands.
I'd give CtW a chance, but as far as I'm concerned, DARKTHRONE was good when they took themselves too seriously, not so much since they've decided to be tongue-in-cheek Black Metal celebrities.

also, seeing as dt are one of my favorite bands EVER, and ABITNS can still put a chill down my spine even after 12 years of being consistently disappointed with the direction of this genre, i feel like i should weigh in; sure, these new albums are bad, but if they kept trying to recreate their past, it would be worse. face it, most bands even the best of the best only have so many songs to write and record until they either become parodys of themselves, or attempt a bold new musical direction which is usually contrived and sucks. clearly dt is in the second category, but i can at least give them credit for doing it out of artistic honesty than anything else. fenriz and nocturno culto can do whatever the fuck they want as far as im concerned, they clearly are honestly into what they are doing now, theyre just not......nearly.....as....good.....at it...as they were at true norwegian blackmetal (before that term became a joke upon it self) who cares? i like fenriz more nowadays for his recommendations of obscure nordic stoner acts but if you dont like what hes doing musically now, shutup and enjoy all the good albums. at least theyre not singing about killing cops cops. sheesh, /endrant

If Pink Floyd got back together and decided to put out an excellent metal album, I wouldn't shun it just because of the storied past of the band. I try to understand and appreciate "personal preference", but in this case I feel the former albums of Darkthrone may color the experience of listenting to the newer albums. We all expect one thing but recieve something completely different.
We all fear change. I get it. But this album fucking rocks. Just because they lost the corpse paint and grim-ness of it all doesn't mean they lost their edge. Darkthrone is now two bad-ass old dudes who don't give a fuck and would shotgun a blunt to your mothers hoohah.
Great riffs- check
Great songwriting and hooks- check
Great DIY sounding production - check
Awesomely terrible vocals - check
Jackhammer drumming - check

I can't disagree more about the change statement. I love new Ulver just as much as old Ulver. New Darkthrone doesn't affect me like old DT used to. The new stuff strikes me as good music to drink and party to. Other than that, I don't feel any connection to the music.
