DIY Stage lighting

For those of you experienced with rigging your own cheap-ass lighting sets for your band, do you have any suggestions to swing my way? What works best for the least amount of money? What should you NOT do? What's an easy way to automate the lights or have them respond to a midi-controlled trigger (IE, kick drum)?

$50 dmx controller with sound chaser option attached to colorblasts.

I think i've decided on using a cheap DMX sound-activated controller with some flood lights and a strobe.
