"Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-La., introduced a bill this week to exempt from taxes all BP payments to spill victims, though its prospects for becoming law were uncertain."

I am totally surprised a democrat is creating a bill like this.

Income from whatever source derived is the tax code. They can offset that by deducting business losses they suffered. Still kinda bizarre though. I'm sure they payments won't be nearly enough to get these people on their feet again.

the real laugh we'll be how much they pay out compared to the actual loss numbers

You're surprised that a member of a party based on attempting to level the playing field of society is creating a bill to try and eliminate some suffering for a group of people adversely affected by something that wasn't their fault? Whatever you say...

I think that was sarcasm.

You're probably right, but my mind read it as "a guy with conservative leanings who would probably criticize the 'tax and spend' liberals being surprised by a Democrat creating a bill to eliminate taxes makes perfect sense."

republicans wouldn't tax bp (government welfare)
democrats would tax the vicitms (regular welfare)

Perhaps I read the sentence about the bill wrong, is the bill supposed to make all victims exempt from paying taxes?

Sell drugs if you don't want to be taxed.

No, I'm surprised a Democrat supports something that lessens taxes people pay. Dems love their taxpayer money.

Republicans love taxpayer money at least as much, they spend it just as fast yet end up with nothing to show for it, probably because they bitch about it at the same time as they're spending it on their rich friends while the rest of the country goes to shit.

So I guess the point is that all politicians like taxpayer money, the only decision is what it gets spent on.

it's cause republicans give welfare to companies (private sector) where democrats give it to the poor and to the government (public sector) so the thinjgs that you see that the dems do are more parks and more poor people. Hard to see another one of a companies ivory backscratchers.
