So I'd like to know: would anyone support a new Constitutional Convention to try an transform our foundational document into something that more directly deals with modern problems? Something that could perhaps be written in such a way as to allow easier interpretation for future unforeseen problems? (ie: as our oil-powered civilization was unforseen by the original Framers) On the other hand whoever was composing it would be under more political and financial pressure than any composer of legislation in history. The Constitution can be amended, but I don't think we could do better than the original document as a starting point, and odds are somewhere between more than likely to almost definite we would do worse. I hated this idea when Perot suggested it and I remain convinced it would be THE WORST THING EVER. I agree with Jefferson in each generation having the right to rewrite in theory but it will be some time until that theory is relevant in practice, it may be centuries (if we make it that long) until such a need is realized. If we by some rare chance in the futre met other sentient life that reshaped our understanding of rights and the universe, that might qualify; I still find it hard to believe such a thing will ever happen though, except perhaps with artifical intelligence gaining sentience. But we'll almost definitely all kill ourselves before we get NEAR that point. |
