I just played it again tonight, its gonna be hard to part with. Channel 2 growls ala early Grand Funk. Real farty low end. The stuff brown notes are made of. I play my (6string) guitar through it with a Big Muff too. Its a tone monster! Its kind of a fluke like the Fender Bassman. Was meant for bass but turned out to be better for guitarists.

"(Note: not as "guitar friendly" as the V-4 which has a master volume for overdrive and a reverb tank)"

if you wanted more dirt all you'd need is either an overdrive, distortion or a fuzz box. And quite frankly, reverb is lame and I've never used it, especially live.

I've seen quite a few V4s, and NEVER one with a master volume that wasn't a modification. Was there a specific time-period where they were made with MV as a stock feature?

Mine doesn't have one, and it's [I believe] a '74.

Unless you're into having the reverb, I don't think there's any difference. Lots of headroom on guitar, but one thing I've noticed, is that the volume doesn't really get any louder after around 1 o'clock on the dial... just more distortion.

I say a V4 with any good OD or fuzz pedal that you like, is a fucking monster of an amp for guitar.

And, oh yeah.. it rules on bass too, but don't expect to get a clean sound at any gigable volume.

The ones with the master volume are later. I think they suck. I also rip the reverb tanks out of my V-4's, those also suck. I had a really nice three spring reverb put into my favourite V-4, but I never used it, so I ripped it out again. The extra tubes = extra heat and meltdowns.

The V-4B is similar to a V-4, but they are voiced differently. A little more "oomph" on the low end, with the "Ultra Low" switch (which a V-4 lacks), no three way gain selection switch (which a V-4 has), and really you can't get as much of an overkill on those "musical" mid-lows that I'm so fond of. I still have a V-4B and use one, I generally scoop the mids more and use it to accentuate the LOW lows and the highs for guitar, and let the V-4 proper handle the bulk of the mids.

Thanks for clearing that up. Wasn't aware of that. When I bought mine, it came with a "master volume" pedal that was custom built for it. It connected via the "ext. amp" jack on the back... sounded like total shit when I used it. That amp begs to be played hard, and loud.

Friend of mine has a 70-something Orange OR-120 with a master volume mod... fuck that thing too. Sounds amazing with the gain/MV dimed, but as soon as you roll that MV back so much as a cunt hair... it folds into a weak little pile of pffffffffffffrrrrrrrtttttttttttt. Def. having that reversed at some point.

those "musical" mid-lows that I'm so fond of.

Yes! Put the mid switch to 300hz and boost the shit out of it. Oozes with Kyuss.

I had my ENGL Powerball modded to basically serve as a V4. It can be done! Seriously, anyone looking for a solid loud rock head should get the fuck on this.

$750 is a great price to actually get a chance to test drive pre-buy. Don't be pussies.
