I really liked Laura's leads, she has good style and a great tone. The whole "drum circle" thing started to get into jam band territory at times, maybe a little too earthy-crusty for my taste, but when they rock out they sound fantastic. One interesting thing, the song "Don't Look Back" has been a favorite of mine from the album, but live it is exposed as the Kylesa-lite track that it really is - so much of the edge and punch of the songs that surrounded it was missing and the guitar solo sounds like a pure commercial radio-friendly cop out. Regardless, the majority of the set was absolutely killer. |

The recordings don't capture the power of this band, especially the 2 drummer aspect of it. late_rising: I can kind of see what you are saying about "Don't Look Back" being kind of a "commercial" song. It is relatively short and and has vocals that lend themselves to being sung along to, but I still think it's awesome and I actually think it works because of that. It's an almost anthemic kind of song and I think it is beneficial in a live setting because it breaks up the set a little. |

Personally I like the older "raw" stuff where laura's vocals are the low/growling ones and the guy does the high piched singing. On the recent release, she does more higher singing that the guy. I liked the drum stuff... there was one part where both drummers were playing perfectly and super fast. I thought jonah would have blue balls after that. Anytime you have people that just have toms, there is only so much you can do and so much sound you can get out of them. it always sounds like "the natives are restless" to me. One thing that was different is that laura carried all of the guitar parts for almost the whole set. The other guitarist came in and out since he was doing guitar/theramin/drum-circle. This sometimes made the guitars sound very quiet since there were no rhythm guitar noise behind her lead. |

Yes, well, as I said I actually really like it on the album, I played it on the radio a bunch of times and it gets stuck in my head for days ... I just felt like in the context of the live set it really sounded weaker than the rest of the material. Part of the problem is the vocal on the chorus, which are almost spoken on the record, don't translate well to the louder more rockin' atmosphere of a live show. As an album track though, it's great, real "shoegaze metal" if there is such a thing - and if WAAF or even WFNX had any balls/taste/class they would put "Don't Look Back" in heavy rotation. |
