Nice - "Fillet and Release" is an excellent method. Fried perch is delicious.

Lost one and put one on the ice on Saturday. Was a little slow, but managed this nice 20" laker:

Dogs weren't pleased about the 1/2" of water on the ice:

Good thread. Do you use flags or rods?

Both my fish in this thread were taken with a jig rod. In NH, on waterbodies that have lake trout (or "togue" for you frenchies) you are allowed 2 lines -- usually we put out 1 tip-up and then jig. I didn't bother with the tip-up yesterday. It was much better huddling in my shelter with the heater on.

I must go soon. Strangly, there was a yellow lab with us the first time I went ice-fishing.

I always bring my dogs. They are a pain, but they always expect to go.

yeah, it's a weekend trip. but I've seen 30lb lakers taken there.

I believe it -- there's always some dinosaur-looking laker being taken from those northern VT lakes. I'd definitely need to upgrade my tackle to fish for those horses.

and it's only about 3 hours away

I can't imagine taking one that size on a jigging rod. We always fish tip ups with med-large bait....including the monster 30lb'er my old man caught.

Yeah, I looked at the map again, and that should be about 3 hours.

I know some of the guys that catch those monsters during open water will sew on whole suckers and hand-yank with a drop line from their boat. Not sure if they do this through the ice as well.

Did your old man get that pig mounted? That's a fish of a lifetime.

No, didn't mount it. He's got a nice framed 8x10 of him with it. Fucking thing could take your whole fist in it's mouth. Hopefully we'll catch some king salmon even bigger than that in Alaska this summer.
