Founding death metal musician Kam Lee (Death, Massacre, Bone Gnawer) blasted those who rely on formula to sell records, instead of making quality music.

It's from "formula" in metal music that has either been the downfall or the up rise in the genre and among many of the bands. When bands set a distinct genre - and a set "formula" is established, once those bands begin the mix or change that formula, is when they take a risk of failing.

When a band decides to forsake the formula that works, and forsakes integrity in exchange to gain “a piece of bread” (make $money) - I personally do not feel my loyalty is any longer of importance to the band. They have already decided that my personal opinion is no longer valid, and that other fans too that may share the same or similair opinions are also no longer important as well.

He pointed the finger of metal's current decline at these formulaic metal makers, and in case someone did not quite understand, concluded his statement with "DEATH-CORE is NOT DEATH METAL!"

It's worth reading the whole thing:

* Kam Lee blasts current metal for following formula, not spirit

gee, thanks for the insight. old men writing about the downfall of metal is as bad as newbs writing a thesis on black metal. i stand guilty as charged.

He's right though. Write and play what sounds good to YOU, don't adapt your songs to fit a certain mold. Unless you want to sound Radikult.

Regarding the money comment, does anyone (except for a select few bands) actually make decent money at metal?

Isn't adhering to the old school death metal style also following that formula?

And: "when a band decides to forsake a formula that works...."? Isn't this an anti-formula rant?

It's not like the dude is sitting around doing shit and saying everything new sucks. He's involved in a lot of death metal bands.

How does that explain that third Massacre album in 1995 that was a TOTAL Pantera ripoff???

It's not an excuse or explanation but around 95 a lot of bands had transitional albums. It was probably just a sell out though.

At the time, he claimed it would "reinvent" death metal. I believe it was the worst selling Earache release ever.

Around 95 was nearing the peak of the second wave of Black Metal so a lot of rats were jumping of the Death Metal ship.

Indeed the mid nineties were a time of hardship and woe for the valiant crew of the H.M.S. Death Metal. With seamen jumping ship on a daily basis morale was low and the future seemed dire. The epic battle between the Death Metal and her rival the S.S. Black Metal further demoralized the crew and, though victorious, the Death Metal\'s days were surely numbered.

Only the H.M.S. Pinafore was real.
