[BEER]2011 Pumpkin Beer

Shipyard - Pumpkinhead, has always ruled pretty hard. It's well balanced but certainly has a great spice note that is rounded out perfectly. Consistently one of the best out there. A

Smuttynose - Pumpkin Ale, not really my thing this year. Too much Puree makes the finish a lil too dare I say bitter. Not a pleasure to drink. B-

Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road - Pumpkin Ale, is a standout again. CRISP. Very smooth balance with the nutmeg and cinnamon makes it wicked easy to drink. Damn fine pumpkin I must say! A

Harpoon - UFO Pumpkin, has a copper color and light head. I feel it's almost more of a juice than a beer. I like this in a glass more than the bottle (which is weird cause I prefer most pumpkin ale straight from the bottle). B

Cisco - Pumpkin Drumkin, this has a sweet dry taste. Brown sugar?? I like how this ale is concerned more with being a Spiced ale rather than a straight up Pumpkin, yet it's totally focused appeasing the pumpkin palate. Damn fine beer from one of MA's most underrated Breweries. A-

Just tried the UFO Pumpkin. Wasn't terribly impressed, but it wasn't horrible. I followed it up with a Southern Tier Pumpking left in the freezer for a couple hours and I think I came twice.

saw yesterday that Sam is going into the Pumpkin area....they have a pumpkin beer in their harvest collection 12 pack

Everything Southern Tier does has ridiculous amounts of flavor, even too much sometimes. Awesome brewery. I think shipyard has my favorite pumpkin.

I completely agree with this, like their 2xipa and Old Winter, but thankfully their pumpkin beer is perfect.

My wife and I were shopping for the Hurricane weekend and she wisely decided to bet a 12pack of Pumpkinhead

The Sam adams pumpkin part of their 12 pack harvest collection is on par with Millys Pumpkin ale from Manchester NH, ...which means an amazing thick and rich brew. Shipyard rules, but its a spiced ale with no pumpkin actually going into the brewing process

used to love shipyard pumpkinhead.. maybe it's changed or i grew out of it but now to me it tastes like bud light with pumpkin spice flavoring in it. ive tried everything else up there too except the cisco, i'll have to try that out. best pumpkin ale i've had is the dogfish one

I have drank so much pumpkinhead in the last month...so much. I love the Post Road kind too. Haven't tried the UFO or others.

Shipyard Pumpkinhead and Beer Works Pumpkinhead. Perfection. I like most pumpkin beers. Belgian beer is where it's at, though. Those fucks know what's fucking good.

only pumpkin beer I've ever had is Shipyard, and I wasn't a fan....didn't like the aftertaste

Shipyard is the most chuggable "pumpkin" beer. It's a spiced ale, though.. Not a real pumpkin ale.

Josh, agreed about the Brooklyn one. I brought that to a cookout the other week and it was great. Until Yeti chastised me for drinking a pumpkin beer before September. haha

Take it from a dickhole like myself that knows:
Best three pumpkin beer are made by Southern Tier, Weyerbacher and Dogfish. It's been awhile since i've had any made by the newer breweries, but i'll do some testing and get back to you.

Weyerbacher is a great brewery. I've been drinking their Heathen Imperial Stout.

Southern Tier Imperial Pumpking - without a doubt the best Pumpkin I've ever had. Deep full body, electric color, bold well rounded flavor. Absolutely phenomenal. A+

Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin - an excellent session from their Smashed series (I'm a BIG fan of the Smashed Blueberry). Very drinkable 9%. Has more spice to it than ST's Imperial but certainly is well balanced, crisp and refreshing, nothing overbearing at all. A

Southampton Pumpkin Ale - Not too bad! Vanilla extract is certainly noted here but it's drink ability warm is impressive. Nice touch of pumpkin up front which is obviously rounded out well by the other spices. This lil brewery gives the big guys a run for their money! B+

QFT. I've been on a Belgian beer kick for the past month or so. Trying any and everything.

Wachusett Imperial Pumpkin - Had a glass tonight and was pleasantly surprised with the nice balanced approach. They really do make some excellent 22 oz bottles at Wachusett and these small batches never fail. Not as hard hitting as other Imperials but it gets the job done. B+

Was at the Harpoon brewery today, had some decadent lunch of wings and knochwurst with their UFO pumpkin. Good stuff, real smooth but not watery like shipyard.

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale - Fucking solid. Imperials compliment pumpkin so well. Weyerbacher makes some heavy hitting batches (old heathen, blithering idiot, quad) so this works great. Go for it as long as you don't mind shelling out 11 bucks on a 4 pack. A

Been on a pumpkin rampage. Pumking on tap is the best I've had so far. dogfishhead is decent. Need to try this Weyerbacher.

I'm gonna be a heretic and say that the Southern Tier Imperial Pumking is a little too heavey. I kinda have to tap out after two. And when I'm drinking, I fancy myself in the 10-14 range. I mean, sure, you can do the ol' 2 pumpkin beer : 1 cider (Crispin, preferably) thing, but... I dunno shit's a little to heavey. Shipyard Pumpkinhead (still haven't found the Smashed Pumpkin) and Wolavers and UFO are prob my fave this year. Post Road is a consistent and I thought the Sam was decent, but not something I'd buy over Shipyard or Wolavers or UFO. The Dogfish is heavey too.

I can't say I've gotten wasted off Pumpkin beer, I mean I love super hoppy heavy ass beer, so it ain't on my radar to just sit down and pound fruity ass beer. But it's great having at least one or two per drinking session this time of year, I mean it's just an absolutely astounding time of year to be a beer drinker. You know what I mean? Literally, ASTOUNDING. I think the thrill with drinking beer is the selection. Drink Less Drink Better.

btw, Angry Orchids Hard Cider out of OH, is hands down the best I've ever had. Woodchuck is great and all but Angry Orchid is DELICIOUS.

[Oct 2,2011 2:18pm - goatcatalyst ""]
That Angry Orchid is good, but Crispin is the cat's pajamas. Honky at the booze emporium told me Angry Orchid was Sam Adams' foray into the realm of cidorz. Lately I've been pumpkin-cider-Octoberfest. Mixing is definitely where it's at, so long as I hit my 10-14 mark and am unable to exercise any sort of responsibility
 _____________________________
[Oct 2,2011 2:38pm - BSV  ""]
so what's the mix ratio? you got like 36 oz glass or something?
 _____________________________________
[Oct 2,2011 2:42pm - goatcatalyst ""]
Oh, I'm not mixing ciders and beers. Though I did make a black and tan with Sebago Lake Trout Stout and Shipyard Pumpkinhead.

Also, the Heavey Seas Pumpkin is fakkin luxurious

the Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale is delicious. infinitely better than Octoberfest.

does anyone else drink these warm? i don't like cold Pumpkin or Octoberfest. the flavor really pops when it's room temperature.

lotsa beer is great warm, good belgians, stouts...better the darker and heavier they get. some layers you just can't taste cold.
