"Stop Online Piracy Act" hearings. Prepare for a Great American Chinese Firewall

Basically the Chamber of Commerce and a bunch of corporations want to have the power to blacklist websites for any reason they see fit. Congress is having hearings on this now. If it passes, which it just might, an ISP like Comcast could block Youtube because it simply has a reason to believe certain videos infringe on copyrights - when of course, you know they just want you to pay for cable. This bill is a big deal. Either way it goes, it would be quite a turning point in modern history.

You know the drill and the language congressmen use to get public support of this bill. DO NOT SUPPORT. All I can do is hold my breath and wait until I have to use a proxy server like some Chinese peasant.

"This sparked a lengthy argument with Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC), who insisted the provision was unnecessary because judicial oversight would be sufficient to avoid abuses."

that's it folks, no need to worry.

Watching these hearings is painful. I watched last night and it's basically a room full of people that need help using a computer and sending an email deciding what is best for the internet. *FACEPALM*

not what's best for the internet, but what's best for copyright holders.

if this passes, i don't see how enforceable it actually is. if it's up to the justice department, they just don't have the manpower. also, pretty sure none of them know the difference between an IP address and a DNS server. The civil implications of SOPA are serious, but it's hard to see where it would get it's teeth.

This is portrait of Aril as Solid Snake.

SOPA deliberations continuing tomorrow I believe. The opponents are vocal and gained momentum last week. We'll see if this unenforceable bullshit goes through.

SOPA is beaten but not dead. 7000 sites including GOOGLE and WIKIPEDIA are blacking out tomorrow in opposition. Holy crap, this is sort of working.

In all seriousness, this shows the flip flopping they all do because they are afraid of losing our support.
All theyre going to do is rework the bill anyways. You know some form of it will get passed.

all eyes are on it. it's tough to say what will happen when the public actually pays attention to a bill in congress. wish it was the same with NDAA.

I honestly think a lot of the senators are just old farts and don't understand why this bill is so bad. The wording in it leaves open a lot of interpretation and opportunities for bullshit to arise. Mostly though they just want to support corporations and the "job creators" I got an email back from the NH fags saying they support it because "its taking jobs away from americans" hahaha ok.... sure.

And by "its" i meant PIRATES , Arrrrrrrrr

so long as there's an economy, there will be pirates, and pirates aren't stupid. i can't believe senators don't understand this. business is cutthroat, and they don't get to have it both ways.

I would bet that our generation (the internet generation) knows 10000x more about the internet than those old farts in the govt.

I cat wait for our generation to get in power.... If we still exist as a country.

this has been suspended indefinitely. nice smoke show on Congress' part, playing a little charade to make the public think they are being listened to.
