Soooo: SOPA is the grandchild in a lineage of legislation that goes back to the fall of 2010 with the introduction of the COICA (Combating Online Infringements and Counterfits Act) bill, then continuing once that was defeated with the PROTECT IP (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property) bill last spring. PROTECT IP (now also referred to as PIPA) was pretty much tabled in July of 2011, but it wasn't ever fully killed. SOPA was introduced this fall and pretty much has the same language as PIPA but it tightens up a lot of the definitions and focuses more on the "foriegn" site aspect. All of these bills are being primarily supported by groups like the MPAA, RIAA and other "big content" holders. They've engaged in extremely dishonest marketing tactics to try and push these bills and others like them. They've mostly focused on how piracy is killing people, but then they took this hilarious "counterfeit pills killed my friend!" direction. See: bennyhillifier and bennyhillifier |
