Saco river canoeing 2012

Just took the last weekend in July off from work (fri-mon). Looking forward to another year of karaoke on an LCD (generator powered), turducken roasted over the campfire, way too much beer/food, tabletop battleship with shots, and making the girl row the canoe. Hoping for relatively shallow water levels, clear skies, no bugs, and less douchebags at fiddlehead!

1.) your Karaoke nights are not the real Karaoke nights
2.) your Saco trips arent the real Saco trips.

I've seen pictures of the glum faces in near-autumn scenery from your saco "trips," aril. I'm sure it's just because you want the chance to show off your metal shirt wardrobe, whereas I pride myself with exposing my hairy navel for the whole weekend. And what do you know about karaoke? I heard you were afraid of singing non-grim vocals.

FYI, boats are "rowed" and canoes are "paddled".

Thanks. Our Saco trips aren't a "paddling" and carry-the-canoe competition. We get in, crack beers, and let the current take us down until we find a nice secluded camping spot.

Only what you do is real? SUBJECTIVE

My drummer is an electrician and several of us are geeks. Nature and canoeing/camping are still enjoyed, but it's fun to have a project work out, like doing one night of river karaoke on a 32" lcd. Apologies to the chipmunks for offending them with our voices.

the only other people we saw in the whole river were a group that flipped their canoe when they were loading it, and a portly gentleman taking a dip.

Alex, your trip sounds like a blast. I can imagine the looks on the patrol guys' faces! We were belting out Maiden in the middle of the night and there wasn't another soul around for at least a mile to hear it. Good times.
I know a ton of people who like going in the summertime and that's fine for them, but I started organizing the September trip to get away from people, internet, and modern luxuries. Its good to disconnect / reset at least once a year if not more often. Plus I genuinely enjoy the challenge of minimalist hiking / camping. If I knew more about foraging and had the opportunity to learn bow/spear hunting, I'd make myself rely on those skills rather than packing hot dogs and dehydrated meals in bags. Buuut I grew up in the city and have never had anyone to teach me that stuff. Oh well.

Just buy a fishing rod and a license. Tip a roostertail spinner with a worm and troll it behind the canoe. You'll catch something.

Water was/is too shallow for good fish. The lake at the end would be great, though.

ha! i own land in new hampshire, and on that land is a stretch of river much too shallow to ever even think about bringing a canoe/kayak down....i routinely catch fish 8-14 inches long

[Feb 15,2012 4:33pm - largefreakatzero ""]
All you do is find deeper holes behind a run. Trout/bass/whatever will stack up there and wait for the river to bring food to them.

You would all starve in the woods.

[Feb 15,2012 4:42pm - arilliusbm ""]
I am not convinced that there'd be many GOOD fish on the Saco stretch that is the most frequently used recreational river in the country. Yes, there's probably some, but i'd throw money down on it. especially last year, I didnt see one fish unless we were closer to a larger body of water.
 ____________________________________
[Feb 15,2012 4:44pm - arilliusbm ""]
And by good, I mean meaty. Obviously theres fish, but I'd want to go elsewhere if we're talking about good fish to eat.
 __________________________________________
[Feb 15,2012 4:45pm - largefreakatzero ""]
Haha, if you could SEE all the fish, so could the osprey and any other predator. Trout use natural camo in shallow water to remain elusive. If you don't wet a line, you'll never know.

In before "I'd rather snort a line than wet a line".
