What do you guys think about hanging tom mounts? Is the bounce cool or annoying? Does it help the drums tone to not have it firmly sitting on the stand?

i'm a big fan of the bounce. i feel a big difference when i go from my rack toms to my standing floor tom. the bounce doesn't affect your playing imho, and it is hypothetically less stressful on your drumheads. it's also way more satisfying if you want to play "through" the drum and there's a bit of give to it. as for the tone difference, there's probably none, but, hypothetically, there would be more fullness to the tone because there is no drumstand to absorb extra shock.

can you still play as hard with it bouncing around?

it's never really been an issue, they don't bounce around too much (i have those floating half-moon tom holders) even when i'm playing harder than i really need to.

^ similar thing here. When I was first switching to mounted, I test-nudged it with my hand and it seemed to bounce a lot, but playing on it with sticks turned out to be totally fine.

there should technically be an amount of resonance/vibration lost because the the hanging design transfers less vibration straight into the ground as happens with your standing floor toms. whether or not you can really here this acoustically or on recording is another issue... i know i can't really tell a difference without sitting right behind the kit.

i'm not sure if other companies do this, but i know mapex started making small shock mounts to put in the feet of their floor tom legs to combat this.

Real drummers don't use toms.
