Gorguts - Colored Sands[views:3929][posts:11]________________________________________ [Sep 3,2013 9:45pm - conservationist ""] You can imagine a group of guys sitting in a room thinking, “How do we make a death metal album edgy?” For starters, they throw in the list of techniques I mentioned. But then they use very similar rhythms, song structures, riff types and even sequence of chord voicings. We could call this “the Opeth effect”: for an instant audience, make music that sounds difficult but in fact is moron-simple and predictable, because it allows people to pose at being elite. http://www.deathmetal.org/news/gorguts-colored-sands/ |

These are both good reviews of this record. It's not terrible, it's not tek-deth per se, but it's also just not all that interesting. |

You'd think for an album that has been completely written for years, that they would've had plenty of time to tweak stuff around on it to make the songs... I don't know, more memorable? I think a large part of it has to do with who the new musicians in the band are, and the fact Luc let them all write songs with him. |

_________________________________________ [Sep 5,2013 11:53pm - conservationist ""] That's a good point. It does sound hasty. Like everyone mailed in their tapes and then, in order to be "good guys," they agreed it was JUST BRILLIANT with no further tweaks. And somewhere far away, reality works differently... no one's so fuckin' genius they don't edit. Not even Mozart. Or Slayer. |
