I just saw that I used 732KWh in August. Curious what others did.

Nothing. My old roommate moved out 4 months ago and cancelled the service in his name. Never switched it to mine. Power is still on.

August 901KWh.
I'm starting to think one of my neighbors is hooking into our electric water heater somehow (is that even possible?). I swear, the fucking thing sounds like it's running all the time, even when no hot water has been used in recent hours.

At first, we thought someone was hooked into our electricity, but when we switched off the main circuit, the meter stopped running like it's supposed to. Then we tried turning off every switch, and turned them back on one by one.

When we hit the switch for the water heater, the meter went from not moving, to moving twice as fast as any other meter around it.

^$9300 for a 3.36 kW system + installation, whenever it becomes available here. By then, it can be assumed that the cost will drop and the efficiency of the panels will rise.

The northeast gets ~4.2 peak sunlight hours a day, so based on my 520kwh/month (summer is peak) that would requires a 4126W system at the most. Off-grid living in the city and there should be enough left over to power an electric car when all is said and done.

I live in an apartment. But if I ever purchase a house, this is #1 on my "important items to purchase" list

I don't have enough direct sunlight for solar panels to do shit.

cut down some trees to burn and put them on stilts.

The panels would have to be on some serious stilts. We're tucked into a knoll on the edge of foothills. I've cut down a shitload of trees, but still not enough sun.

oh, not enough... my dad has 48+ and he has one of these
http://www.centralboiler.com/products.php
feeds into his boiler so unless they are taking a shower or it's super cold, they just have to feed the outside burner once a day. but he can cut down 10 cords a year and not notice it.

Those things are sweet, and you can burn pine and other softwoods that you couldn't burn in a woodstove. I'd consider it, but we just got a new furnace (propane) 2 or 3 years ago.

My office is over the garage and I have a small woodstove. I basically heat my office for free. Well, not factoring in the horrific property tax rate in my town.

Ok... I started turning off my computer 10/1. I just got the bill for 9/9-10/8. So 1 week of turning my computer off and my bill went from $149 to $109. I went down from 732KWh to 642KWH.

ok, I found my old bill and it was for 33 days not 30 like this month. The bill was broken into 2 parts with the first 6 days and then the second 27 days.
6 days = 164KWH
27 days = 732KWH
that was $149 (for 880Kwh)
27Kwh per day @ $4.52 per day

This morning was for 30 days where 1/4 of those days was me turning things off and it was 642KWH for 30 days and $109.
21Kwh per day @ $3.63 per day

I don't really think I'm not really dumb enough to be blinded by the math and say "wow, I saved 6 watts at 1/4 so that's another 18KWH per day so I'll be using 9KWH per day!" but I'm sure it will go down a bit more.

No, I have 2 atom processors now in 2 servers. 1 ivy bridge laptop. And one quad-core q9550 from 20100.the quad-core is what takes all the power.

ok, so this month's bill was only for 29 days and was $95.xx and I only used 555Kwh.
that is 19.13 KWH/day at $3.27 per day so that is a 38% savings just by turning off one computer...

I'll be on the lookout for an i5 Haswell rig on black friday, mainly for power savings. Currently on an AMD x4 9950 which is nearly 3x the power consumption, which will be repurposed for a seldom-used media pc.

You should get a proliant server. Those thing cost $200 and suck about 30w. Plus, they have bays for 4 drives.

So I used 625KWh from 11/6-12/6 @ $106.56 = $3.55 per day.
I knew it was going to be higher cause I've been using an electric heater a bit until my gas unit is fixed in the bathroom. Also, I left my old computer on for 5 days accidentally.

Turn them all off. Massive savings. You can't heat your house with servers alone.

I have a N40L and it can as long as you don't do any transcoding.
If you are transcoding, I would use the PS3 since it does it better than anything I've used.
