I listen to The Bobs a lot. They're my idols and the reason I listen to music (my sis gave me a tape of them back when I was a wee lad). You might appreciate them. They're kinda silly and comedic (though they don't get to Composted levels of humor but they do have a song about a girl who names a guy's penis Earl).

Dredg, Crash Test Dummies, Imogen Heap, Feist, Coldplay, Keane, Sia, The Fugees are all favotires right now.

Khoma, which has members of Cult of Luna has also been bumped lately.

And two other faves are Caspian, and Callisto, the latter's latest album Noir still having residues of their metal/heaviness, but mixing a lot of other amazing textures.

Don't know how the fuck I neglected to mention my lesbian midwives, Tegan and Sara. I adore them.

Same with Scott Walker. "The Drift" is one of my favorite albums in the history of ever. His early work with the Walker Brothers and his first four solo albums are like secret-handshake closely guarded fucking TREASURES. And I won't even get started rhapsodizing over the otherwordly brilliance of "The Electrician"... the sonic equivalent of David Lynch channeling Nick Cave on a really dark acid trip.

And of course, Nick Cave, Joy Division, Bowie, Van Morrisson ("Astral Weeks" in particular), Brian Eno, The Stones (especially the old Brian Jones era shit) and Nick Drake (total bum-out music- Pink Moon is one of the heaviest non-heavy albums of all time).

And on a Bowie-related note, that dude Seu jorge (black dude singing Bowie songs in Portuguese in "The Life Aquatic") rules.

Also been really into Woven Hand. So bummed I missed him at the Middle East.

Fuck- why do I even bother with metal? Smelly fat kid music.

The Mars Volta, Alice In Chains, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Led Zepplin, Motorhead, The Doors, The Who, Rush, Rolling Stones, Tribal Tech, Primus, Anything with Victor Wooten on bass, Anything with Gary Willis on bass, a lot of other jazz/funk that my old guitar teacher would have me listen too. Basically a lot of rock, jazz, funk, and classics. And if you want classics, you can't go wrong with the aforementioned The Doors, Led Zepplin, The Who, and Rolling Stones. And with Tribal Tech...well, you can't go wrong with a little guitar/bass jazz. For some good old classic jazz, Miles Davis all the fucking way.

That Beirut CD is quite melancholy. Postcards from Italy is my favorite.

I listen to a lot of random things.

Lately I've been listening to The Elected, Rilo Kiley, and Sufjan Stevens a lot.

The Elected is like a blues country ish rock band with the bassist from Ozma and the guitarist from Rilo Kiley. Sufjan Stevens is AWESOMELY arranged indie music. I don't know how else to describe it because he does a lot of cool things and it's almost always awesomely arranged. Not every song is good, but it's always arranged like a mastepiece.

I think if you want to get into classical --

Go for the Central European works. And start with the Romantic period, not Baroque or modern.

You kind of have to train your ears...

The Eastern Europeans are too much like candy and too much proto-modern/Romantic hybrids.

Jazz....i'm big on jazz percussion..... Buddy Rich is God.... and anything with a pianist that goes above and beyond any others in the style..... like Thelonious Monk.........but i can appreciate many forms of jazz (except that awful "typical-black-female-singing-over-lame-lounge-music" crap)

Blues (i won't lie, most of it is unoriginal/sounds similar, but i still love it
i love taking my lunch break at the "Tennessee BBQ Pit" because they always have some damn good blues crankin over the speakers)

Tardcore (not all tardcore is heavy...it's an odd/hard to define genre)

Start with both -- Ottorino Respighi, a modern, re-used Baroque and pre-classical forms and melodies in his "historical" compositions, which are quite good and fit the modern ear well.

Must upload.

I've heard of Respighi. Haven't heard the stuff, though. I'd probably like it; I've always loved some of the styles used in Baroque composition.
