I think it's hillarious that EVH has all the Marshall's. I heard he actually does use marshalls even though he's endorsed by peavey. hehe.

I don't get what people do with all that equipment.

like why are there two heads in some pics? do they just route signal to all the different amps and then to a cab or two a piece?

I grew up doing the head + cab = your sound thing. I never got into rack shit nor do I even really understand it, so a lot of this is bizarre to me. I've rarely ever gone to shows in stadiums (been to the centrum like 2x) so I don't even know what to think when it comes to playing those places.

basically I've always worked to have a good, analog head with a responsive, well-rounded set of speakers. Nothing more, nothing less.

anyone care to do amplifier 101 for me?

you up for it?

why does corgan have two 10"/8" mini little combos? for monitors?
 ___________________________________
[Mar 10,2005 12:08pm - powerkok ""]
umm....well basically poweramps just push your preamp sound in a rack system. so if you have a preamp like pod or a digitech, then your poweramp just uses that as a 'front end'
other than that, I dont think you really need all that equip in those pics...theyre rock stars, im sure theyre very eccentric.

maybe onstage ear tuning.....maybe a crappy sound he gets and likes in one of their many crappy sounding guitar breaks.

two heads? sometimes backup in case one fails, but also you can run two at the same time in more than one cab obviously. Or have each with different settings and you can A/B between the two.

As far as all the additional rack gear, to be honest, I don't even know. You'd have to be a super pro guitar tech to figure out what's going on just from looking at the pictures. You'd really have to have someone show you what's going on. I'm sure you need some monstrous sound to play arena's and for it to not sound whimpy. Sometimes they have like huge wall's of stacks in arena's so they'd need many heads to power it all. Some people just prefer rack gear, you can customize your sound quite a bit more and make it sound good if you really know what you're doing. I don't know what I'm doing haha, I prefer the sound/tone's of head's. I don't think many rack's by themselves can hold up against most 'boutique' heads. That's why you see some Bogner's in with the rack stuff. There's tons of technical shit to sound that's why there are professional guitar/amp tech's that just do that shit as a job and probably know way more than the musician using all the gear.

Those little mini-combo's? I'm not sure exactly, but possibly for the guitar tech to quickly test guitars or for billy to warmup...

How much volume can you get out of the SWR head? Is that 550 solid state watts? How much do you have to push the amp to be heard?

i want a matamp rig, even if they are kind of trendy in the "rock"world, the are pretty fair price for handmade tube amps....and i love the muddy sound. Before i can afford that im gonna get a laney set-up....well now back to the pictures.

my rig is nothing to drool over (yet), but its got love.

[img][img]

i keep the crate 4x12 (loaded with celestion vintage 30s) on my side, and i keep the 2 2x12s (one loaded with blue marvels, the other with crap that i will be replacing) on the bass side. i have all these cabs because it is a full stack that i can transport all myself (i dont have a truck to lug around 2 4x12s with). eventally, i will be pulling a ron from malignancy, and getting 2 pod pros and running each one into separate cabs. i will drool that day. and you notice how i always play my soloist? its cus a have a really crappy backup. but at the moment i am building a rhoads copy that you will have to see to believe. pictures will be up someday.

The little combo amps are most likely there for his guitar tech to use for reference. They're not mic'd and they're not facing the crowd so they definitely have no intention of being heard by anyone outside of a three-foot radius.

The point of multiple identical amps is to send the same tone through more wattage to increase stage-volume before involving the house PA. Like in that pic of EVH all those heads are running the same shit paired to the same cabs or a small variety of cabs so he's pushing 1200 watts (12 amps X 100w each). He can route to all these amps at once via switch-panels like the blue one on top of the effects rack in Corgan's pic.
Sometimes big stage-setups use dummy cabs (empty cabs that look exactly like normal useable ones) just to take up space on stage and make it look like they've got more to their sound than they do.

Hey Tom, Peavey actually just discontinued the name "5150", it's not the "6505" and they have the plus version too that is equivelent of the 5150 II. the board is the EXACT same as the 5150, just a different name and wooden filler for the front. also, they charge a tad more for them now.

And someone mentioned EVH playing the Marshalls, When you're EVH you can tell whoever "endorses" you what you're gonna play Im sure. PLus he still played the 5150's exclusivley. He may have only had a head unit contract too.. who knows.

In that first pic, my Johnson Millenium 150 has it's back to the camera. But that's my Framus Dragon 4X12 Cabinet with my American Fender Strat.
that second pic of the Ibanez S470QS is also mine, but i'm thining of selling it.
I also own a Fender Princeton chorus 120, An Epi PL Standard (My first axe) and my main guitar for STF, a first run ESP/LTD Viper.

Im not a fan of rack equipment... I just rock my Sig 5150 with that Framus cab and I play through your basic Boss Noise surpressor and Boss tuner.
