I was expecting to hate this no matter what, but I was at least hoping that they'd do something with some sort of musical integrity to it. For a band that's been around for so long and written some awesome shit in the past (mainly And Justice For All, in my opinion), this is the Lord of the Rings fail (the most epic of fails). I think I was busting out similar tapping solos when I was 15 years old. What the fuck. Even though I haven't enjoyed Metallica in years, I could never deny that Kirk Hammett was a great lead player, but now it's pretty easy to say that he's lost it.

I can hear direct references structurally to some of their older material (Fade To Black and One, to name just a couple), but with nothing new. It is obvious that they either can't write differently or purposely copied their own music. To make this song as long as it is should be considered capital punishment. Boo-urns.

does anyone actually cling to the hope that this band will ever put out anything good ever again? seriously.

NO, NOT EVER AND NEVER!!!!! Just like things will never be the same, maybe if they lose all of their money and then have to start from scratch again! That way they are in it for the music, fans and scene and not world tours or hot topic sales!!:2FINGERS:

I think it's ok, it doesn't suck. Production sucks ass though!

It's like fade to black meets the newer sound.

Ok, so what happened? The song started out ok, and then this horrible change came in and then the song was ruined. Something they did quite a bit in on the last one. I don't have any delusions of great Metallica again, so I suppose this is way better than the last 3 records. At least they are doing solos and rocking a bit harder.

not me. i haven't given a shit about metallica in years. i haven't listened to the song and i don't care to. they could put out the next bohemian rhapsody and i wouldn't give a shit. first four albums and parts of the black album are enjoyable. a couple songs on load and reload are enjoyable if you pretend it's a different band.

Best new stuff they've done post-black album...............which really ain't saying much at all. Solos coming back are good. It has the feel of 80s Metallica but it's just not good. They've lost it. It really is never coming back.

Meh

metallica will never put a good CD out again. hiring producers to help with the writing process is the first problem, letting kirk record rhythm tracks is the second and the fact that they are so maintsream i the last. they will never put out another master of puppets because the majority of fans like the new shit better. they dont give a fuck about their roots they just want to sell a million records and tour the world.

I heard this abortion on Sirius the other day -- I made it about 30 seconds in. If they want to continue to play music, change the name of the band to something else.

Have you ever heard "Master of Puppets"? If not, then I can understand your ignorance.

I am not even a Metallica fan, but this isn't THAT bad. At least it doesn't have that shit-can snare sound the singles off of "St. Anger" had.

Ok, here goes.

Ow.

By 1 minute in we have:

Tinny "not exactly Fade to Black or One but we're trying" arpeggios (except too high), half-assed attempt at a harmonized solo (KIRK YOU ARE BANNED FROM THE FIRST THREE STRINGS) with that shitty fuzzbox sound, trashcan snare, and - wait for it - GENERIC METALLICA BALLAD TURNAROUND #6.

Listening...

(Is my speaker clipping, or does the snare sound like that for everybody else, too?)

Hetfield, you can't sing that well, but that doesn't excuse the "yeah-yeahahahasss" thing in this song. Just mix it low like you used to; you don't have to be the wolfman right now.

Ooh, the chorus. Yup, there's the song title. KIRK STOP IT, I KNOW THAT LEAD WORKED IN "THE UNFORGIVEN" BUT YOU HAVE TO MOVE ON.

Alright, back to shitty lead #1. Then a verse. Chorus. Yup. Now we're doing something different. Annnnnd...

Oh, good, Southern rock again - you guys totally haven't run that little twist into the ground.

"Love is a 4-letter word?" I mean, I'm actively trying NOT to listen to lyrics, and that one jumped out and kicked me in the nuts.

Oh, it's fast now. Wait, what? Somehow "one.mp3" got cued up on Winamp and now it sounds like shit - WAIT A MINUTE.

Thin Lizzy lead, that wasn't so terrible I guess.

Meedlies and squeedlies, only I'm guessing they let Trujillo play those on a left-handed guitar while drunk, 'cause I distinctly remember both those other guys knowing their way around a guitar pretty well. Hmm...

*MEL BAY'S "HOW TO PLAY METAL LEADS THE EASY WAY" SECTION GOES HERE*

Ok, those three chords again, I remember those.

*chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk hey remember how And Justice was a good album?*

Meedly meedly WE'RE DONE.

Well, that went pretty much how I thought it would. *shifts uncomfortably*
