I don't see how that applies to any of these bands, the line-up is a broad range of styles from death metal to thrash to various other styles of metal, but absolutely no hot topic mallcore allowed.

Although somehow I doubt you listened to all these bands on your way back from the YMCA, Village Person.

The hot dog post is strangely on topic, though, as fresh grilled hot dogs are included with the price of admission.

Parking is free and venue is very 4:20 friendly, where else can you see an eight band metalfest, eat, have parking covered, and practically be guaranteed to get smoked up all for $15?

Best of all, CTMetalFest is as always a DIY/by the bands show with no outside "promoter", so all money after expenses goes to the bands. This is the sixth year we've headlined CTMetalFest, and all but one year had paid attendance in the 150 - 300 people range, which we like to think is a hell of an accomplishment for a DIY fest with no nationals at a venue with no walk-in draw; we want to make this year the biggest ever, please come out and support \m/

True, it'll still be light out by the time they go on, too, d'oh. Won't be hot though, this is more like late spring than midsummer so we won't all be sweating our balls off.

1. There's these things called websites on these intertubez here where you get to click on a band's music and listen to it.

2. For starters, Lords Anointed are from MA not where I live in CT, Lightsbane is from southern CT near NY but they were just on NEMHF this year in Worcester, and Suicide Dream (my band) has headlined over a hundred shows across MA, CT, and RI and been regularly performing in the northeastern metal scene for well over a decade, playing shows with Crowbar Overkill Type O Negative Exodus Moonspell Mastodon Doro Pesche too many to list blah blah blah and going from Maine to Indiana. It's one thing not to like us, that's fine, but if you haven't even heard of our name, you don't appear to be very familiar with the northeastern metal scene to the point where I'm surprised you would even be posting on a site like this. But maybe you're new. I've only been posting Suicide Dream shows here on rttp for ten years now.

I%20Have%20A%20Question said:and why would anyone pay $30 to see them?

1. the idea is that people will be encouraged to buy half price tickets in advance instead, committing a large crowd to the show investing in going instead of flying by the seat of our pants the night of and seeing which way the wind blows - it's especially important to know the draw for a big show like this where you have to get the right amount of food in order to not totally overshoot or undershoot it.

2. all the bands on the bill are hard working bands in the New England metal scene that get out there often and play originals, and they identify as metal - not metalcore - and there's no promoter taking a cut.

3. there's this really cool thing called going out and watching new bands that are writing and performing metal in case you might like some of them, and supporting the New England metal scene.

Wrong. We made a profit on that show.

They gave us 30 tickets. We sold 33 (buying none ourselves, fuck that shit, and having a couple people who bought tickets not making it to will call and we resold those tickets at the last minute) so we ended up walking out of there with over a hundred bucks, beating the Webster ticket system which made the maximum we could have made $30.

Fuck paying to play and buying your own tickets. No bands on this show are permitted to buy their own tickets, we want people to see the bands not a bunch of bullshit.

It really wasn't that hard selling tickets for Type O at all, FWIW, the Webster gave us a week and $23 tickets so I was worried at first, but people really didn't want to miss that show (and they were right, that was their last tour and Peter died only months later).

Haha, true for many I'm sure, but fortunately most of us who read and post here go to metal shows and don't just complain about their very existence online. Don't be one of those people who complains there are no good live shows/new bands out there and then refuses to ever check out new bands for the first time. You might actually really like a band you're not already familiar with.

Just pointing out that it wasn't pay to play if we made $100 (you can't have it both ways) - and I'm not saying $100 is a lot, we got $650 to headline Beltane Festival earlier this month and we'll probably get at least as much for this fest, if not more. Just settle down, Beavis, go to a show and get baked, it's more fun.

Bully people? It's just making it easier for the bands to sell their $15 tickets, how can you feel bullied to buy an advance ticket to a show because it's half price? That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

If a fest with 150 - 300 people paid attendance five out of six years it was held is a fourth rate local band fest, I have to find these first, second, and third rate local band fests where eight bands draw several hundred people instead of a measly two or three hundred. Let me know when you play one of those, I will gladly come and support (not joking at all), I'll make sure to pay at the door and not buy an advance ticket so as to not feel bullied by you.

Hey Question Guy, whining about the flyer was two days ago.

Solo I've played in DC, Sweden, and Iran, our singer/bassist has played out in Europe. As for our band we've always been self-managed and never opted to invest the time and money in going further out touring to the degree that's required of a metal band that doesn't have label backing, in great part because we didn't have a full length CD and shirts/other merch completed to make such an investment make sense at the time; we did do a demo as a four-piece that sold out and turned down some indie deal offers that came from it plus some offers to do some shows in NC and elsewhere, because we were opting to wait for something bigger to come along, but by the time we were really hitting a peak and about to record something new with our updated three piece line-up, I went and had a kid while our singer also took a hiatus, and then once you have a wife and kids you REALLY can't rough it across the country hoping to break even on the travel and send home little to no money - so yeah, but finally our full-length CD is almost done and we can actually mail it to labels, something we never actually did yet (the indies I mentioned came to us after hearing the music online or seeing us live) so we can finally see if we can get a good enough deal to record and tour on terms that work for us.

Ha ha seems a good burn - except when you stop to think that bands never have to stop promoting if they continue playing out, no matter how big they get. Good try though, consultant, 9 out of 10 for effort, your job at rttp is safe.

Truth said:So every band needs to sell 20 - 30 tickets to get on this?

We ask every band to shoot for at least 40 advance tickets and we hold ourselves to the same standard, there's no penalty for not hitting that mark but we ask each band to aim high. All the bands that play this with us each get all their money after twenty tickets sold, plus a hundred dollar bonus at forty tickets sold, plus an even cut of 100% of the money from people who pay at the door, plus all band members eat for free, plus if we end up ahead enough at the end of the night we pay more on top of that (we have in the past paid an extra twenty-five to a hundred bucks to a band on top of all the agreed upon stuff if there was enough money left over). In previous years, some bands have made $300 - $500 on just the advance ticket sales part of it: Invictus, Mornalir, Dwell, On The Rocks come to mind just off the top of my head. We all know those kinds of numbers are normally unheard of for a multi-band local show, so it's a great gig if you're willing to work hard and beats counting on some non-musician and self-proclaimed "promoter" to get people to the show who in most cases brings no one and then takes a bigger cut than any band member who performs.

I have no regrets, man, the last ten plus years all I have done for a living is music: mostly playing guitar and teaching guitar. That's not easy to pull off. Just the ability to be even do that and to be able to play with the caliber of musicians I get to play with in this band is a real gift that I'd be ungrateful to gripe about; stadiums can come with time, the road to getting to that point is as important as the road from then, and the path we've taken so far has given us the chance to play with some great bands here in the scene that we wouldn't even have met otherwise. I wouldn't change a thing.

I give Shadow points for tenacity. He loves his band and can't shut up about it, and that's pretty American for an Iranian.

His bassist also has that intriguing Sandra Bernhard thing going, where she's alternately hot / terrifying depending on the angle or light or something. And that has entertainment value itself.

CT is a different world than MA. Case in point, if you live in CT, this show is actually something to might consider going to, because there's fuckin NOTHING going on otherwise. I hate this kind of music but according to shit-eating videos I've posted here, it takes all types. Apparently, some people think shit tastes like cake.
