I dunno Ken, I disagree pretty strongly. I agree that Proposition 8 violates the civil rights of gay people in the United States and I think it is a healthy exercise in democracy to try to create change through a peaceful, organized protest such as this. If the government is going to treat gays like second class citizens and bar them from the same privileges as others based on their sexuality, then society as a whole either needs to push for change or accept the consequences of governmental discrimination.

No sir, I agree with your statement wholeheartedly. Although i think calling in sick is NOT the way to push this point. Not that i have any better ideas, but i know if i called in "gay" to work tomorrow, i would be fired. Bottom line. And with the job market the way it is, that is not an option. This is why i said this is dumb, not because of the ideology behind it.... i mean shit, my bass player narky is gay.

I guess my only response to this is that there's probably a philosophy that until there is a clear spokesperson, leader of the movement to promote the changes desired, it's probably not the quality of the protests, but the quantity. Getting news coverage is enough to raise a little bit of awareness. I mean, if we're talking about it here, it's already working to some degree.

So they're calling out of work in protest, and spending the day doing community service? Yeah, what a pack of assholes...all wanting equal human rights and stuff. The nerve.

"Join The Impact, the online community that launched protests last month over the passage of gay marriage bans in California, Florida and Arizona, has urged people to withdraw $80 from their bank accounts Wednesday to demonstrate gays' spending power, and to devote the time they might otherwise spend watching TV or surfing the Internet to volunteer work."

WOW, total dicks, right? I guess they should just stand idly by while the government makes laws based on biblical dogma that violates their human rights.

I mean fuck them...who do they think they are...PEOPLE.

Brian and Ken, go back and read the article. They're not calling in to stay home on their gay little asses, they're calling in to do community service and spend 80.00 at small, hurting local businesses to demonstrate just how large a chunk of the population is gay by making a community and economic impact.

i'm with you on being against the violation of civil rights. i just think skipping work is a bad way to prove the point. what if a gay person's company was supportive of gay rights? wouldn't skipping work be a slap in the face to that supportive company? why make businesses pay for the government's transgressions? i think there are a lot more constructive ways for people to peacefully make their points and have their voices heard.

I tend to think that if the company were supportive of gay rights, they'd happily grand the person his or her day off.

Eliminate all religious connections from Government, PERIOD.
I'm afraid we may not see this anytime soon; that is, unless the country splits. Religion and government don't mix. The unfair treatment of gays is due to a philosophy and moral judgement based off of religious ideals.
It's something I don't think we'll see even in our lifetime, perhaps. I've had this stance ever since I saw the corruption in society and government; my mother caught me burning bibles when I was 14 and I still won't back down. Death to Christianity.

[Dec 9,2008 11:29am - dreadkill ""]
pam, i agree. the company would most likely just give the person the day off. i say, if you have a vacation day coming to you, take the day off and do what you have to do. as long as people aren't using it to screw over their place of employment, then do it.

I don't know. If they use a vacation day, then they get paid for that. To me that would screw over the place of employment more and a little less principled than missing work in a way that will probably leave them unpayed for the day.
 _____________________________

Yeah, definitely. By the nature of the protest and the careful way the LGBT community is doing things, I doubt anyone would skip out on work if they were forbidden to do so.
 _____________________________________
[Dec 9,2008 11:33am - ouchdrummer ""]
Like I previously said, i agree with the ideology. But my company would not, under any circumstances give someone the day off to protest that they aren't being treated fairly. Mainly because in my workplace everyone is treated fairly. So why should my company suffer the loss of workers for a day. (Quite a few I may add) So again, yes, there SHOULD be people trying to show the country where they are going wrong, but i think people will lose their jobs in the process.

They had an interesting segment on Larry King last night. It was that really famous Preacher from down south that's always on TV. FUCK, what's his name..
Anyway, when Larry asked him about gays and marriage and rights, the guy literally choked up for a good 2 minutes. He then blurted out that he thinks they should not marry. It was kind of funny to watch.

if it's your vacation day, you can do what you want with it, so how would that screw over a place of employment? it doesn't matter if you're protesting for equal rights, going on a trip, or staying home to jerk off all day. it's your day off.

your point makes sense. taking a day off without pay shows that these people are taking a stand with something to lose, not just something to gain. taking a vacation day means hey are risking nothing, but my point is to not cause collateral damage to the employer unless you want to risk the collateral damage of losing your job.

Well it's almost noon on gay strike day... has the economy come to a standstill yet?

Anyone else not really surprised by this "strike"? The United States went to war, people were losing their jobs and their homes, and the biggest thing on gay people's radar was getting married. Now the economy is in the toilet, and they want people to call out of work. Maybe enough gaymos will get fired, and open up some jobs for real people.

There are 3 people in the sales wing of my work, 2 IT guys, and 1graphic design guy out today. Which is a lot in a office of only about 35 people right now. Nobody besides me knew about the "movement" today.... so of course i clued everyone in.... which was maybe a bad idea. Because now people are calling the people who are probably legitimately sick (i know for a fact everyone besides one is straight.) and harassing them with voicemails. It's funny for sure, but i could see a lawsuit coming of this if someone that called in is in the closet and decides to be sensitive.

Goes to show, when you work in a testosterone driven sales office in Government Center with a bunch of dudes who only talk about football (mostly fantasy, not the NFL) or pretend to know about politics, and really just recite Jay Severin's bullshit, you probably should just keep your mouth shut..... but i have problems with that.

If you don't shout that you're gay in people's faces, the people you want to know won't fuck with you, and you hate the others anyway.

Not all gay men are sex maniacs. We're just men who love men. The whole world needs to just grow up about this and get over it, including gay activists.

Just to say FUCK YOU to all of these idiots, I'm taking Thursday off, and calling in stoned.

The majority of the gay people I've met have been nothing but attention starved antisocial misfits, who claim to be gay not because they're actually gay, but because they want people to pay attention to them. It's no surprise to me that gay priorities, as xmikex pointed out, consist entirely of calling attention to themselves regardless of what's going on in the world around them.
