Watchmen The Dark Knight Returns Arkham Asylum V For Vendetta Maus From Hell
Anything by Frank Miller or Alan Moore automatically kills. If you haven't read Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, you haven't read comics.

and always keeping an eye out for an interesting horror comic or zombie comic
read the Walking Dead. every person i've turned on to this comic has become a fanatic.
Yar - all my friends in Worcester are obsessed with this. I haven't had a chance to read more than an issue and a half, but it does seem to rule.
Preacher, one of the best graphic novels ever. You can't go wrong with a comic that includes a comic-ized Bill Hicks performance.
Just got into these recently; the pop culture references are amazing, but it's a solid book besides. Great shit.
If you want to see a lot of where a lot of elements for The Dark Knight came from, read The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween.
Totally seconded, but you also need The Killing Joke (Alan Moore). That's the other half of the puzzle with The Dark Knight, in my opinion (and it's amazing besides). Grab Batman: Year One (Frank Miller) to get the comics version of Batman Begins, while you're at it. If you're at all into crime books, or if you appreciate Quentin Tarantino's work but would like it minus all the faux-cool posing, you must own all of Stray Bullets. It's completely fucked, and highly awesome.
