I need help finding a venue for a show

I'm trying to find a venue where we (Shroud of Bereavement) can host a show...unfortunately, we have some tricky requirements.

We want to bring our friends Todesbonden up from Maryland to play with us, and the only time they can travel up to New England is for a Saturday night show (edit: in September). Also, they run their own in-ear monitors, and require a minimum of (edit: 10) mixer channels to do that.

Shroud has 7 members and Todesbonden has 6, so the stage can't be really small.

I've already contacted the Middle East and Church...Middle East won't give us a Saturday show, and Church is already booked for all the weekends this summer.

It doesn't need to be in/immediately around Boston (although that'd be nice)...just somewhere in New England where we can bring a decent number of people to a decent venue. 18+ would be nice, especially if it's around Boston, since I have friends around here who aren't 21 yet.

KC's is out...the last time we played there, it was a huge project to get us and our shit there and back, and the turnout ended up sucking because almost everyone (incl. most of the other bands' members) left before we even started, and we got cut short, and it's my understanding that it's hard to get people to come out there anyway.

Ralph's might be a possibility. I'm not familiar with Oasis.

I don't have a particular date in mind, other than "a Saturday in August"...I'd have to ask Todesbonden if they have a preference. Can you tell me more about the venue itself?

The Venue is in the back area of a pool hall in Worcester (London Billiards). I've booked about 5 or so shows there and its actually a pretty cool environment for metal. I believe the board has 16 channels - although some of the channel dont work that well. Also there are no monitors because some scumbag stole them. That may change however come august.

They have their own system for it that they control. They just need enough available channels on the FOH board to be able to set it up. FWIW, we're not talking about some random local band.

"They have their own system for it that they control. They just need enough available channels on the FOH board to be able to set it up."

Maybe i don't fully understand this... but if they have their own complete set up wouldn't that include a mixer? Expecting clubs to have that many free channels could really limit what else is going through the PA (NO drums) and a lot of smaller places flat out couldn't do it...

They have their own monitor mixer, and a snake that goes from that to the venue's own input box. This way, they can have the monitor mixer onstage with them, and control how that's set up, and then send the unaffected signals to the FOH board as well.

This would not be 10 channels dedicated to monitors PLUS whatever's going through the mains, but included in whatever's going through the mains.

Would you rather see a band with an amazing singer hit lots of bad notes because she can't hear herself? A lot of venues have monitor mixes that are questionable, at best, and for a band with a melodic singer, this can be a serious problem. Sure, if you're in a grind or death metal band where you don't need to worry about being on pitch, this is pretty much irrelevant...but for a band like Todesbonden, being on pitch is key (no pun intended) to having a good performance...and if they have a way to control their own monitor mix, then why not? It's not really much more time-consuming than going straight into the venue's input box, and they probably have preset levels that they can tweak from if need be.

Shroud has entirely too much experience with bad monitor mixes, and we've definitely talked about the possibility of getting in-ears for our singers...and probably will do so at some point in the future.

Professionalism is very important, and I think that whatever it takes to get the best possible live performance is worth pursuing if it's not completely unreasonable.

No, I understand their setup perfectly. I originally posted this thread not remembering very clearly how it worked, but after being reminded by Todesbonden's guitarist, I can tell you that this is not a difficult thing to set up at all. I work as a stagehand for a living, and if a venue's sound guy didn't know how to set this up, I'm sure that I or someone in Todesbonden could set it up for them, no problem.

i totally understand the need for the singer to hear exactly what's going on.. Our singer in UI uses a nice in ear monitor... but why does the rest of the band need em? I mean honestly unless your playing places that are big enough that you wouldn't hear the drums/stacks on stage than it would be totally unnecessary.

[Jun 18,2009 5:22pm - BoarcorpseJimbo ""]
don't get me wrong, i'm sure they're a wonderful band/group of guys by how you're talking about them. (I don't know em) I just question the neccesity of how they do it. But it is nice to hear a metal band's vocalist using one.
 ________________________________________
[Jun 18,2009 5:32pm - WarriorOfMetal ""]
I'm not sure if the whole band uses them or not, but either way, the way they have it set up takes the sound guy out of the equation (in terms of monitors) when there are way too many incompetent ones out there. I think that even if just Laurie and Patrick (violinist) were using it, they'd probably still want something similar to keep things consistent from show to show.

sinistas - keep in touch, we'll talk about it.

Obviously that depends on how well it gets promoted. If we get something set up soon and promote it right, I think we can bring a decent crowd. I figured Shroud would headline, Todesbonden as second billing, and then 1-2 local openers if we can find the right ones. We promoted the shit out of our Metal Thursday show last month and had a good turnout...50+ people I think, in a small venue on a Thursday night.

Where do you have in mind for Boston?

Just to clarify one detail in the original post here...

With or without the In-Ear Monitors, we have 10 channels. We are merely running them all through our own monitoring mixer beforehand, then sending the uneffected signals out to the FOH mixer via our own snake. The IEM's, although they will affect no one at all except us, are necessary for us to stay in sync to our keyboard parts, which do not presently come from a live performer.

Jason
Guitarist, Todesbonden

(edit:

PS - the setup consists of:
4 for drums (Kick, Snare, 2 Overheads)
2 guitars
1 bass DI
1 vocal
1 violin
1 keyboard track

We will set up everything in our live rig and supply all mics and cables plus the XLR snake out from our mixer.)

[Jun 18,2009 11:12pm - BoarcorpseJimbo ""]
That makes total sense. I've thought of doing something similar so we could totally control our mix. So let me ask you, I had always thought that i would give the FOH mixer just a left and right channel so it would be real hard for them to screw it up. What's the advantage to giving them the xlr snake?

Mainly, the biggest advantage is not having to be the FOH engineer on top of being a band member and monitoring engineer. I do both of the latter for Todesbonden, and that's more than I'd really like to be responsible for...but if it's that or put our monitors in someone else's hands, I'll gladly take it.

Plus, it would be very difficult, I would imagine, to gauge how we sound to the audience (as mixer) while standing on the stage (as performer).

So I guess we sorta take a gamble by sending the FOH mixer all the individual channels. We just hope/assume that a venue will hire someone who knows how to work the sound system they invested the money to buy if they want repeat business and good word-of-mouth.

The Lilypad in Inman Square will allow all-ages shows. Capacity is only 93 though. And you can't crank up to 11, if you get my drift. It's $35 an hour to rent it out, you can rent it out for as many hours as you need, just gotta send 'em a check for the full amount ahead of time. You set your own door price, keep all the $$$ day of show.

Drawbacks: doesn't serve alcohol but there are tons of bars right next door.

Cambridge YMCA Theatre. Huge stage, about $300 to rent it out. All-ages. Great sound. Very classy. Drawbacks: no bar, can't play past 10 pm (but you can book an all-day, all-ages show on a weekend).
