guitarists (or soundpeople) really need to start understanding that MIDRANGE frequencies are YOUR FRIEND at live shows. so many bands suffered from sub-par mixes which really reduced the impact of the performances.

some comments:

Autopsy: fucking amazing, shame that you couldn't hear any of the mindblowingly twisted guitar solos. i'm happy to say that i've finally seen Autopsy in my life.

Coffins: fucking awesome. end of story.

Eyehategod: of course fucking awesome. they also seemed to charm the pants of the crowd by being such genuinely nice scumbags. how is Mike Williams still alive? he puked on stage.

Entombed: at first, the single-guitar attack sounded a little thin but after a while they were so intense and tight that they won the whole place over. the guitarist was doing some fancy pedal shit to double the guitar in certain points (like cutting out the right channel on guitar breaks and simulating a second guitar coming in by turning on the right channel). his looping fucked up while doing the epic part of "Left Hand Path" but it wasn't enough to take away from the performance. it's crazy to think that he and the vocalist are the same age. it's interesting what time does to some people.

Blood Duster: if you didn't have fun during this you're a fucking asshole.

Romperprop: also a blast.

Nirvana 2002: shitty mix with ear-piercing guitars. one of the guys was out of tune for the ENTIRE set. obvious that they have not spent a lot of time playing shows. could've been mindblowing but was a letdown.

Obituary: as the years go on i like Obituary less and less and find them to be rather retarded on CD... but holy fuck, they are perfect for live shows! all of their simple riffs and shit go over really fucking well on a good loud system. it's really nice to be able to actually hear every instrument, and even John Tardy's vocals were screechy and insane and cool, much better than on CD. his fucking hair!!!!!!!! jesus.

Repulsion: awesome in theory, but unfortunately a little unintelligible live. i enjoyed it but it didn't exactly slay.

Gridlink: crazy, but again one of those sets that just didn't translate in a huge live setting. it just sounded like noise, bad mix so you only hear low end + cymbals and vocals.... would be much better in a smaller venue or on CD.

Sadistic Intent: better than i thought it would be.

Possessed i.e. Jeff Becerra and Sadistic Intent: nice feelgood set for the heads.

i haven't been to this fest before, so i was overwhelmed with the amount of uber-underground representation there. even the shittiest of crusties would seem to sport something like a Multilation patch or a Morbosidad patch or some Mortuary Drape logo next to their Amebix logo. little hot girls walking around in Blasphemy shirts. more Sarcofago repping than i have ever seen in my life. is this the same at ALL death metal shows these days or was it just because of the sheer undergroundness of this fest? how many of these little shitheads actually listen to this stuff?

whoops, thought this was a general re-cap thread.

it dont matter. all the threads here cross polinate eventually.

i completely hear what you are saying with most of the midrange, but epecilly the shirts... there were so many people wearing shirts and you know that they dont really listen to that band. i also witnessed some of the absolute newest looking jean jackets with the newest looking patches i have ever seen. everyones gotta start some where, but it smacked of neo thrash. i did see an awesome leprosy cover shirt that i coveted.

I made sure I didn't wear any of the shirts I bought that weekend to any of the shows, as I didn't want them to end up giant balls of sweat. So my reviews of what I saw...

Ex-Dementia - Old school death, sounded pretty good.
XBrainiaX - Out of their element at a place like Sonar for sure, but they played tight.
Swarm of the Lotus - Sounded like metalcore, left.
Nekromantheon - Awesome old school thrash, I watched most of their set and they slayed.
PLF - A truly eclectic bulldozer of sound, awesome.
Iron Lung - One of the most pissed off bands there is live, comedic stage banter in between songs, and Jensen is also a very hard hitter on the drums. I wish I could see this band every week.
Birdflesh - Great costumes and great band, if there is ever a band worthy of the word "goofball", it's these guys. But I like that sort of thing.
General Surgery - They were cool but I was too tired to watch all of it.

The Communion - I only saw the last half of the last song.
Putrescence - Sloppy and kind of boring.
Defeatist - Tight as fucking hell and a real barrage of sound, they kicked ass.
Malignancy - I HATE this band on CD but they were okay live I guess. A lot of people complained about the sound on the outside stages throughout the fest. A band like this worked better for me outside since you couldn't hear all the unnecessary technicality.
Gorguts - See Malignancy review
Tombs - blech
Nazxul - See Tombs review
Watain - They were good for a few songs but then I got bored. I mean, it is black metal after all.
Gride - Warp speed ten! Energetic as shit and they really kicked some ass. Probably the best band of Friday.
Coffins - I can't even remember what this band sounded like, honestly.
DRI - They were doing a lot of rock star type shit on stage, making faces like "Wow, is it really us playing these songs? We're so cool!" They had some problems with Spike's guitar and while he was off fixing it, the bass player was playing random Dio songs and whatever else and basically being embarassing. Their drummer sucked too. Probably the biggest let down of the weekend. I stopped watching during the technical difficulties.

Sulaco - zzzzzzzzz
Fang - I liked them more on the outside stage, it seemed more suited to them. The stage banter was funny. The music was still boring as fuck though.
Ingrowing - These guys were KILLER! I hope this band plays the states again soon. Set ended with one of the guitar players jumping up onto the barrier, letting everyone in the crowd bang on his guitar, then tossing it to the side and diving into the crowd. That's a true finish right there.
Total Fucking Destruction - Total fucking garbage
Impaled - Somehow I'd managed to never listen to this band before, at least not that I can remember. They were great live, makes me want to look into them more.
Blood Duster - I can't believe how much old stuff they played. Yet another assault of sound and only a couple of the rock type songs were played. Kind of wish they played more though.
Obliteration - Same guitar/vocals as Nekromantheon, this seemed to take on more of a death metal tone. I didn't see a whole lot of them (I was browsing the merch tables while they were playing) but they sounded cool also.
Melechesh - I could tell by the name I wouldn't like this band and I was right.
Verbal Abuse - I only watched a few songs but they sounded great and had a lot of energy. Old dudes kick ass.
Repulsion - They kicked insane amounts of ass! The setlist was mostly just Horrified in order so it was really easy to keep track of what they were playing too.
Autopsy - INSANELY BRUTAL! My only problem with the set was that I couldn't hear the guitarist on left side (my left) too well so some of the solos he did were almost inaudible. But the tones were great, the setlist was diverse, and it all around ripped! Not to mention they were probably one of the biggest drawing bands there, but still so humble. Always a bonus.

Rottenness - BREEBREEBREEBREEBREEBREEBREEBREE fuck this band.
Surroundings - They were pretty good, another band I felt was out of their element at a place like Sonar though.
Mass Grave - They were also pretty good, but definitely not a band I'd ever shit my pants over. I last saw this band three years ago and never bothered to listen to any of their material if that says anything.
Rompeprop - One of the most fun bands of the weekend! Everything about this band is comical to me, the bassist dressed in a skeleton costume playing a bass that looks like a dick fucking a vagina, the fact that there were two microphones set up with one to talk to the crowd and the other having the pitch shift on it (and these guys have one of my favorite pitch shift effects of anybody), the fact that they did a cover of "Born to be Wild" and called it "Porn to be Wild", the fact that they're playing goregrind yet all the songs are as catchy as pop-punk type stuff, the traditional Dutch music opening... I wasn't sure this band would translate live but I thought they were great.
Gridlink - Absolutely fucking ripped all over the place. People weren't even really moving around, they were just trying to figure out what was going on while in awe. They switched guitars a couple times during their set too (5-string bass to 6-string and back, 6-string guitars to 7-strings and back). Awesome.
Crucifist - Can't even remember what they sounded like, didn't watch them for long.
Black Breath - I thought they were pretty good musically too but got the same weird ego vibe from their vocalist (standing in such a way as to make himself look cool, throwing the horns, calling everyone in the crowd sick motherfuckers all the time, etc), kind of ruined it for me.
Eyehategod - The pic of me flipping off the camera while standing up on the high pillar was while I was watching this band play. They played right after Gridlink so it didn't really go down quite as smooth but they did sound exactly as I expected and I dug it.
Captain Cleanoff - Holy FUCK! The intensity of this band's set surprised me so much, easily in the top five sets of the weekend. Fast as fuck, all the tones were biting, and the vocals were truly harsh. Full package achieved.
Entombed - I was hanging around outside talking to my friends while they were playing on the street stage across from where we were. I like Left Hand Path and all but these guys sounded like dog balls.
Converge - I'm not really familiar with the new album but when I heard it at a friend's house some months ago, I thought it sounded as good as Jane Doe. There were tons of people who showed up just for this band on this day. The crowd was absolutely insane and Converge always delivers live.
Magrudergrind - I'm so fucking tired of seeing this band. Set was typical.
Capitalist Casualties - Same setlist as the Providence show (as the tour?), and another band that sounded noticeably out of their element at a place like Sonar. However, they were still intense as shit and standing on the barrier to scream along whatever words I knew was the perfect way to end the weekend!

I think I missed that part, I kind of walked in and out of the room while they were playing.

What did you eat all weekend? I take it you didn't have time to grab some grub while at the fest. I'm glad I got some Waffle House and Wawa food, the rest of the time I was there I just went a couple blocks over, had Subway once, 7/11 a few times... that corner diner was a ripoff when I ate there, just as bad of a price as the food inside the fest.

I'd say also that my problem with Total Fucking Destruction as a band is that to me they're pretty much the System of a Down of grind. They start playing a riff and you think "Oh that sounds pretty cool" and then they transition into the WORST possible thing, a guitar part so bad that if I played it I wouldn't even play it a second time, never mind put it in a song and all the while your ears are bleeding wondering how they could do that to a perfectly good song.

This could explain why they have been slow to gain favor, even though the people in the band are some of the chillest and illest in metal.

Wait, people actually think that guy is a great drummer? I enjoy TFD, almost solely for the comedic aspect and abundance of Tom Araya yells, but yeah, not a good drummer. Watching how he "blasts" is hilarious.

Between CDs, records, and shirts I must have spent at least $300. I've been working full time (and hard) but living with my dad so there's really not much in the way of bills and I can afford to pretty much spend what I want. I only bought two beers while at Sonar (I got a case of Yuengling for the hotel room and got a free Budweiser during Rompeprop). I smoked some weed while there but mostly during gaps where nothing I cared about was playing. I wanted to be straight while watching the bands because I just can't get into a show nearly as much when I'm all fucked up... live music is best enjoyed sober.

I saved a good portion of my smoking for the hotel room. Especially that last night. Wow.

Fang - Fun band. I remember good old-time hardcore choruses but forget what they were saying. Oh well.

Birds of Prey - Watched half their set. Stoner rock that could have been good but failed, the vocals turned me off, and the first song just flat-out reminded me of Creed.

Sinister - Watched from afar and the guitars sounded huge but couldn't tell the difference between songs. Meh, big fan of Cross the Styx....why bands don't play full albums at shows like this is beyond me.

Asphyx - Couldn't hear Martin's vocals from where I was which is probably the most important part of the band. I was way more into the show last year.

Watain - I could barely tell what songs they were playing. They sound very different live. STTD is somewhat sterile but I'm a fan of Cassius. Enjoyed them a little more last time in Cambridge. I wasn't impressed until they played THE RETURN OF DARKNESS AND EVIL and it was the only part of the fest I stormed the stage and went fucking ballistic. That was the part I felt like I was at a black metal show.

Gorguts - Impressive from afar. The best drumming of the festival.

Naxzul - BORING. I stood right up front waiting to be impressed, had never heard the band before the show. Lackluster outfits and what the hell was they keyboard player doing kneeling over his laptop half the set? Their slower songs were much better because they had a semblance of atmosphere but it was mostly black metal devoid of any attitude whatsoever. Maybe their albums are interesting, I would hope so if they came all the way from down under.

Krallice - More boring black metal with 'orthodox' riffs. Their drummer was fucking amazing, he really hammers and can kill the cymbal accents. But he should get a better band that doesn't stare at their shoes. Deathspell Omega's pissant son.

Jucifer - MEGA BONER. I had no idea who this band was. Banshee calls and strobes lured me inside, and I was in awe. The loudest band of the fest. She made a prostrate fan out of me right away.

Autopsy - FUCK YES. $50 set. Chris Reifert is among the death metal gods. I thought the police chopper was still flying around above but it was just the bass guitar. Apparently they were filming a DVD? Watch out for it. DEAD.

Obliteration - Another FUCK YES. Celtic Frost with waves of dead wind and militant death metal runs with so much power. Can't wait to see them again. My biggest surprise of the fest.

Melechesh - Waiting for them to play on fire in the desert sun under the vaporizer's influence. What a great band. The drums came up short compared to Proscriptor's work on the albums but it was more than made up for with the rest of the band. First show in the US I guess? I thought I heard him say they were going to close with Rebirth of the Nemesis but that even in a democratic country they were told they couldn't play it. I was wondering why they didn't. Lame on many levels.

Pestilence - I was grooving. They sounded great, new songs were meh. Bass player is amazing to watch.

Gorod - Also sounded great. Melodies really came through.

Gridlink - Awesome, these fuckers can grind!! The seasoned bass player's shirt said "Kill Yourself So I Can Grind" and that's basically what they sounded like. I like seeing a whole lot of extra strings in stellar grind bands. Made me a fan right away.

Crucifist - These guys were fucking terrible. Excuse me for being particular about black metal. Cardboard cross? Whatever, you sounded 14.

Necrophobic - Better than Crucifist but still cheesy. Sounded thin from where I was. You get your armor online?

Pentagram - OOOOOoohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Glad we took the time to spin up a few joints before hand. Bobby Liebling really puts on a show and their sound would have blown Sabbath or Zeppelin away. Truly among the greats.

I had a great weekend and can't wait til next year. Hell, I would have drove down just to see Autopsy and Pentagram.
