What styles do you want to include?

Metal... Period. Fuck syles.

Disturbed, Slipknot and the like will not be excepted.

Yes.

Naturaly, I need headliners with a draw but I don't want to hear people bitching about the national acts not being metal enough. Also I want this to be something that'll get some serious metal community notoriety.

US/Canada:
Cannibal Corpse
Cryptopsy
Arsis
Morbid Angel
Nile
Nevermore
Iced Earth
Slayer
Megadeth
Dream Theater

If you are including Europe/England:
Blind Guardian
Necrophagist
Dragonforce
Dimmu Borgir (or some other big-name black metal band)
The Haunted
Kreator

Bands like that would probably pack whatever fest you want.

Lets try to stick with the U.S./Canada. If the band is already here on a tour then maybe I can get one from overseas.

I'm just trying to think of bands that are huge (or on the verge of being huge) that will pack the house, guaranteed, and will probably cost you through the teeth. But you will make money if these bands play. The bands I've listed are pretty much the most popular in existence.

I left out Maiden and Priest.

If you are looking to go smaller, there are thousands of choices.

Jag Panzer is going to draw like four people. Honestly. November's Doom is attainable, but how many people would they draw?

I apologize, when you said 'ultimate' I was thinking more along the lines of something like Mass Metal/Hardcore fest, Wacken Open Air, etc. I misunderstood.

You're looking at something much more cozy though (and frankly, cooler).

I'm looking to set up a two day fest with strickly local metal bands hand picked. Each day will have two national headliners with 8-10 locals. And I want headliners that will cause people from all over New England to come. I don't want some Locobazooka bullshit. I'm not in this for the money. Sp log as I break even on this in the end I'll be happy. America just doesn't have enough metal fest and especially up this way.

cus if you are, then one of those bands might be something to consider (a smaller band like TTEOTD would work, the others are fairly bigtimers).

i know nearly EVERYONE on this board is going to want a strictly 'metal metal' show though.

I think Panzer would have enough following around here, espicially if its going to be at a local level size wise venue.

Other bands that are 'big' but not 'to big' to consider would be:

Nevermore as I already said
Amon Amarth
Old Mans Child as you said
Necrophagist
Vital Remains even though it seems like they were around a ton this year
Cellador... not as a headliner but a close to headliner like spot
Dark Tranquility

when you thinking of doing this anyway?

kids eat that power metal stuff up now that dragonforce went and got popular over night, Cellador and JP have built their cult following up. Power metal stuff was dead back in 2002 over here with the exception of maybe Iced Earth starting to get bigger... But anyway, Despite my personal bias, I am saying them because I'm assuming we're talking about a place that has like a less than 400 capacity (which I know they can't draw) but their inclusion as a secondary headliner would open up the appeal to some kids who wouldnt normally go, and with power metal on an upswing right now it would be cool to include one power metal headliner. All the known power metal bands are either to costly, to costly by being overseas, to big or have no US drawing power.

if bands like dr. chuds x-ward can headline fests of this size, JP totally could

or just get Nevermore. haha

It might be more conservative to have something like:

NOVEMBERS DOOM and OLD MAN'S CHILD another night.

Then stack the rest of the lineup with the local big draws or the hand-selected bands that you believe in.

well, Novembers Doom is very easy to get intouch with (seeing since they're friends with Shroud), and will probably ask for us to play as well if you get them. If you're looking into other Doom bands, look into Swallow the Sun, Mourning Beloveth, Confessor, even getting prices for My Dying Bride may be a good idea (because people would come from all over to see MDB)

as far as other North American bands to look into:
Nevermore
Cryptopsy
Nile
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Iced Earth
Deicide
Absu (may not draw that much, but they're sick)
Vehemence
Vital Remains (preferably WITHOUT Glen Benton)
Neuraxis
Augury (not many people know of them, but they're brutal as fuck)
Cattle Decapitation (impressed the shit outta me when I saw 'em)
Embalmer
Immolation
Suffocation
Capharnaum (but you'll need wheelchair access)

'local' acts to consider:
Porphyria
Seed
Coffin Birth
Hatchet
Extinction Agenda
Valasyrka
Shroud of Bereavement (yes, I'm suggesting myself, I'm such a whore)
A Terrible Night for a Curse
Hand Choke Neck
Life at Zero
Goreality
Burning Oath

ok dudes, this guy needs to tell us what venue this is going into.
how much he's investing into this.
an aproximate date when this was going to happen.
times on date or dates.

and a little more detail all around so we can more accurately gage.

AILD: they are on SOTU so are tied up. they also are $$$$/$$$$$ now. all of the bands for "headliners" that you all have listed cost a minimum of $2000 and that's the cheapest ones on the list. there are a couple of them that cost $10K+ when they are on tour. one off headliners would be probably $15K (Iced earth, I'm looking your way).

I like all these bands, so I'm just being honest here and guessing the costs and draw.
AS I LAY DYING >> christian metalcore draw over 4,000 people. cost probably close to $10K
IN FLAMES >> nu-metal mixed with melodic death metal. cost $5K-ish if they are in the country. draw 1,000-2,000 people
TRIVIUM >> thrashy metal with hardcore elements some guitar masturbation. cost around $5K. draw 500-1000 if marketed right.
TERROR >> around $500 if they are on this cost. draw about 100 people.
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER > melodic death metal. cost $2K. draw 500-1000 people
BEHEMOTH > black metal, some death influences, some atmospheric interludes. costs $2K and plane tickets. draw 100-200 people
THE CHARIOT > norma jean. costs under $1K. draw 50-200 people.
THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD costs $500-ish. draw 50-200 people.

Exactly, that's why I was saying in my first post that we didn't have enough information.

Are you serious about AILD drawing 4,000 people? Man does that make me sad.

Iced Earth is not worth $15K. Iced Earth is not worth $15.00. I'm sure they'd draw, but $15K worth of people? Maybe in Greece.

Both Augury and Dissilusion would be awesome! Augury is from Canada so it wouldn't be too hard to get them in (I actually have them on the list for the fest thing I'm doing next year in Vermont). Dissilusion is going to cost some cash to fly them in. Textures would be cool if they "accidentaly" left their vocalist at home. Best of luck with this, though! Sounds like it could be a good time.

at taste of chaos, there were 7-8K people there and atleast 1/2 the audience was there to see AILD. they are good dudes so I have no problem with them. some of the clean singing in there songs are getting annoying, but besides that they are still the same band.

Porphyria

There's more I just can't think.

just for that, I'm going to put their CD in.

I'm always a little confused when a band that I sort of like gets huge, but just because someone picked up on the trend and not because they changed what they were doing.
heck, I had no firneds in highschool. just did my own thing and listened to "weird" music. then 1/2 way through my junior year, doing your own thing and listening to "weird" music was the cool thing to do so I had all these friends I never had before over night. I didn't like any of them and I don't talk to a single one now, but I got to do more than just sit at home playing video games, watching saved by the bell, and jerking off so that was cool.

No, they're a 4 piece and get a fill in guitarist when they play live

the lead guitarist and drummer are still the same, they got a lead vocallist and I think a new bassist... I'll go check now.

they're looking for a bassist

DreamingInExile said:well, Novembers Doom is very easy to get intouch with (seeing since they're friends with Shroud), and will probably ask for us to play as well if you get them. If you're looking into other Doom bands, look into Swallow the Sun, Mourning Beloveth, Confessor, even getting prices for My Dying Bride may be a good idea (because people would come from all over to see MDB)

as far as other North American bands to look into:
Nevermore
Cryptopsy
Nile
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Iced Earth
Deicide
Absu (may not draw that much, but they're sick)
Vehemence
Vital Remains (preferably WITHOUT Glen Benton)
Neuraxis
Augury (not many people know of them, but they're brutal as fuck)
Cattle Decapitation (impressed the shit outta me when I saw 'em)
Embalmer
Immolation
Suffocation
Capharnaum (but you'll need wheelchair access)

'local' acts to consider:
Porphyria
Seed
Coffin Birth
Hatchet
Extinction Agenda
Valasyrka
Shroud of Bereavement (yes, I'm suggesting myself, I'm such a whore)
A Terrible Night for a Curse
Hand Choke Neck
Life at Zero
Goreality
Burning Oath

I'm still not certain how Dissection is planning on getting into the country for that NY show. The guy fucking killed someone (well, kind of) and then was released and got the gayest face tattoo ever conceived. I'm pretty sure both of those will hurt your chances of getting in.

After hearing their new album, I couldn't care less if they get in

I saw them in Germany last summer and holy crap was it awful. I couldn't even really tell what songs they were playing.

What I find amusing is how Jon insists 'Reinkaos' is the master work of the band, their true epitome, and how they are breaking up afterwards because there is no way they would ever be capable of topping it....

Wow, I hadn't heard that! I was never a huge Dissection fan to begin with, but that makes me really sad.

The first two records are fantastic, I prefer 'the Somberlain' but I'm not as big of a fan as many people I know either.

I was all about the Necrophobic.

Yeah man! I've only heard Darkside and Bloodhymns because I'm a noob, but one of these days I'll get around the checking out the rest. I think I have the new one floating around somewhere

Those are pretty good records, but man...Nocturnal Silence ALL the way. One of the greatest metal albums I've ever heard. Their debut album.

The new one is alright, the worst was The Third Antichrist.

I've heard Nocturnal Silence is the way to go. I'll bump it way up on the list of stuff to check out.

Therion (they played on a tuesday last time they came : (
Moonspell (they have never had a set in america over 20 minutes)
Primal Fear
Howling syn (a canadian goth-metal band, it'd have a good draw and they would be easy as hell to get)
cellador (soon to be the next big power metal band in america)
Amon Amarth (they'd get a good draw from power metal nerds, death metalheads, and viking/folk metal trolls)
Into Eternity (another good band that never gets a long setlist but would have an amazing draw from metal heads)
Finntroll (hands down they would sell out the show to any metalhead who has even heard of the concept of finntroll)
wintersun would also be amazing
angra

your basic formula for a good metal headliner is a band that people of both sides of the metal spectrum could enjoy, I'm talking about those on the brutal extreme metal side and those on the power metal progressive side. A band like necrophagist would never draw people from the power/prog group, and a band like Angra would never sell to well to the death metal kids

Moonspell headlined at the palladium about 4 years ago. It was the only time I've seen them. So yes they have played over 20 minutes in the U.S.

I've only seen moonspell that one time they opened for devildriver and nile. I know they played with cradle too, but I don't remember hearing them headline.

To my knowledge, they've hit up the Palladium four times:

With Opeth & Devildriver.
With In Flames and the Kovenant
With Cradle & Type O Negative (Saw that.)
And once as a headliner. (Saw that, it was the night of a snowstorm).

Yeah, I saw Moonspell headline over Lacuna Coil in 2001 (I think) and they fucking ruled. Then I saw them open up for Opeth and it was the lamest thing I've ever seen. It's too bad their Katatonia tour isn't swinging up to Boston.

That was it, they played with Lacuna Coil when they headlined. You'll have to forgive me that I put that band out of my mind as quickly as possible.

I saw Moonspell open up for In Flames UPSTAIRS at the palladium (it was the colony tour)

if moonspell was gotten, the should not be allowed to play anything post-Irreligious

I still like Lacuna Coil's Unleashed Memories, but everything else I've heard has been unlistenable. The time I saw them with Moonspell was in a tiny rock club in Chicago with November's Doom opening up, it was kind of weird.

I like all of the Moonspell albums as well!

Novembers Doom is awsome.

I wish they drew more people around here though, because I'd love to see them as a headliner

I like almost all of Moonspell's records. Including the past four.

"Butterfly Effect" was fantastic and unique. Another one of those records I just don't get why people hate. It's creative, original, and good. I personally feel it was their best.

If it's the "Wolfheart" sound you long for, they definitely have some of that on "The Antidote" and the brand new "Memorial".

There were a few songs on Lacuna Coil "In A Reverie" that were pretty catchy, otherwise I can't really stand that band. I'll just listen to the Gathering instead.

I've never been able to get into November's Doom. Just too bored when I listen to them. Now, Novembre from Italy, that's a kickass band.

I don't hate the newer stuff, I just didn't get into it like I did with Wolfheart and Irreligious

Oh no, I just meant in general, people are really hard on that record.

[Jun 23,2006 9:53am - DreamingInExile ""]
yeah, that's true.

As far as Novembers Doom, you must have heard their latest CD, The Pale Haunt Departure, and you still didn't get into them? I think that album has an unmatched groove to it.

BACK ON TOPIC
another band to consider would be Confessor, one of the most highly innovative and highly underrated doom bands ever
