That's inaccurate. You're forgetting the Moorish occupation of Al-Andalus between the 10th and 15th centuries. The Caliphate of Cordoba was the central non-Christian power in Europe during the 11th century, and the Caliphate exchanged embassadors with the Holy Roman Empire which itself was experiencing a period "dark ages." While the rest of Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages, Muslim occupation helped the Iberian Peninsula to flourish and produce some spectacular works of art. |
